Although the icon himself tragically passed away in 2018, Anthony Bourdain's famous quotes about travel and food still go viral on social media regularly. His legacy as a celebrity chef, author, and travel connoisseur cemented him in the hearts of food lovers and aspiring writers alike forever. With a mindset full of frankness and humor, deeply focused on his love of food, and a desire to see as much of the world as possible, Bourdain was an inspiration to many.

Bourdain was well known as a television personality, starring in various programs that focused on exploring international cuisine, but before that, he was an influential New York City chef and the author of the bestselling memoir Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly

Bourdain graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1978 and proceeded to work in several professional kitchens, notably including several years at Manhattan's Brasserie Les Halles. His experience at Les Halles after ten years working as a chef inspired him to write the essay "Don't Eat Before You Read This," which was published in The New Yorker and gained plenty of media attention and sparked his career as a celebrity chef.

After Bourdain published "Don't Eat Before You Read This," he gained popularity outside of the niche world of New York fine dining, which led to the release of Kitchen Confidential. Just as he was a talented chef, he was an exceptionally talented writer. With humor, earnest honesty, and a knack for telling entertaining stories, Bourdain went on to publish a number of different books about his life experiences and the intersections of food and travel. He wrote across genres, including some forrays into fiction. He even got his own publishing line through Ecco Press, which would publish several titles a year by chefs and writers that Bourdain liked. After his death, the line was shut down.

Bourdain's first foray into television came with his show A Cook's Tour on the Food Network. After that show, he hosted some of the Travel Channel's culinary and cultural adventure programs. He eventually moved his travel and food show to CNN, where he was the host of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. It was while filming an episode in France for Parts Unknown that he died in 2018.

"If I'm an advocate for anything, it's to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. Walk in someone else's shoes or at least eat their food," Bourdain once said. This mindset of travel and food as key cornerstones to understanding the human condition is what Bourdain was known for, and why his opinions on food and travel mattered so much to so many people. He saw travel and engaging with local cuisine whenever possible as the best way to understand what it means to be alive, encouraging people everywhere to experience lifestyles that are different than their own and to open up their understandings of the world.

With talk of a new biopic about his life starring Dominic Sessa in the works, Bourdain's legacy will be revisited in the near future. If you're feeling nostalgic and want to revisit some of the chef's most iconic moments, look no further than L'OFFICIEL's round-up of young photos of him.
