Earlier this week, Willow Smith opened up about her sexuality on her mother, Jada Pinkett Smith's, viral Facebook show "Red Table Talk." The 20-year-old musician reveals that she is polyamorous, which means she believes in forming romantic relationships with more than one person at a time. On the show, Smith speaks out against the many conventions we as a society attach to intimate relationships, including sex and marriage. She specifically discusses the pressures of being physically intimate with a partner, and how polyamory alleviates some of that stress. In describing how her relationships function, Smith offers this hypothetical: "Let's say you haven't always been the person wanting sex all the time, but your partner is. Are you going to be the person to say, 'Just because I don't have these needs, you can't have them either?'" She adds: "That's one of the reasons why I was interested in poly because I was introduced to it through kind of a non-sexual lens. In my friend group, I'm the only polyamorous person and I have the least sex out of all of my friends."

Smith also explains how the main foundation of polamory is "freedom," which allows you to forge a meaningful relationship that is right for you. She also actively rejects the fact that so many people believe that monogamy should be the default relationship style. Monogamy is intrinsically connected to the construct of marriage which Smith also takes issue with. She elucidates, "The history of marriage really irks me[...] I feel like the only way that I would get married is—let's say me and my partner or partners wants to help people, and we need to put our finances together in order to make that vision happen."

Smith’s affinity towards untraditional relationships doesn’t come as a surprise after her parents announced that they have a very open approach to their 24-year-long marriage. The talented singer recently released a track with Travis Barker titled "Transparent Soul," and continues to be outspoken about prevalent topics such as race, sexuality, and culture.
