Top Google 2020 Searches Around the World

With just over two weeks left in 2020, Google has released its "Year in Search 2020," a package of year-in-review data, organized by country, to illustrate this year's biggest moments across the globe. For each country, Google has sorted the top searches of 2020 by category, inlcuding babies, outfits, games, definitions, people, news, etc. Overall, terms related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the United States Presidential Election topped the list across several countries. However, more localized national news also made the cut. In Italy, race car driver Alex Zanardi was the most searched person of the year after his severe cycling accident in June, while the people of France spent the summer googling Benjamin Griveaux, a French politician who was caught in a sex scandal while running for Mayor of Paris. 

Another common theme throughout the data was searches for instructions on doing things at home. Users from around the world took to Google for information on making bread at home, one of the biggest baking trends of 2020. Others sought out templates for making their own DIY face masks. U.S. searchers were particularly interested in at-home haircare, including self-given haircuts and the TikTok trend of "hair plopping."
