Simone Biles Withdraws from U.S. Gymnastics Olympic Team Final
The gold medalist announced that she would be stepping out of the competition due to a "medical issue."
After a rocky start at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the International Gymnastics Federation has confirmed that Simone Biles has dropped out of the Team Final due to an injury sustained in competition. Shortly after the announcement, the U.S. Gymnastics team put out a statement reiterating that Biles exited the competition because of a "medical issue." The organization said, "Simone Biles has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue. She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions."
During the 2016 Rio Olympics, Biles made a name for herself as one of the best gymnasts in the world after earning four gold and three bronze medals. Widely considered the GOAT (greatest of all time), her performances are characterized by their speed, power, and high degree of difficultly.
Earlier this week, the athlete qualified for all five individual events—the only gymnast to do so including the four individual finals and the Team Final. In her first event for the team, she struggled with her vault, receiving a 13.766—her lowest Olympic score ever.
Without Biles, U.S. gymnasts Grace McCallum, Jordan Chiles, and Sunisa Lee finished up the event, taking home silver for Team USA. If Biles receives medical clearance to continue, she will move onto the individual all-around finals on Thursday.
