The London-born-and-bred artist pushes boundaries with her genre-bending abilities and has swiftly caught the attention of music heavy hitters like Charli XCX and Rihanna.
British singer and DJ Blaine Muise, professionally known as Shygirl, has been on the cusp of stardom for years and recently received a Mercury Prize nomination for her debut album, Nymph. released in 2022. Her rise to prominence came after her work with friend and close collaborator Sega Bodega, along with the likes of cutting-edge producers Arca and the late SOPHIE. But Shygirl released various singles since 2016 and doesn’t confine herself to one genre of music in particular, blending hyper-pop, hip-hop, and dance music. Now that she's clearly slated to become a bona fide superstar, let’s dive into the most important things to know about her.
She was born in London, U.K.
Muise was born on May 4th, 1993 in London, England, and grew up around Catford, a district in Southeast London. In an interview with Notion, she shed light on her formative years and how it molded her musicality. “My parents are both working-class Londoners and I grew up reading a lot. Books but also reading slang stories like Keisha Da Sket out loud off people’s Sony Ericsson’s. I just really enjoy language in all its forms, and having a vast vocabulary includes slang,” she said.
She studied practical photography at the University of Bristol
In her early 20s, Muise studied practical photography at the University of Bristol and found the environment to be creatively enhancing. At this time, she also worked at a modeling agency during the day and DJed at night.
She threw a rave with Björk
Back in May, Shygirl joined Icelandic singer Björk to DJ for a rave beneath a bridge in Brooklyn. Coined “Brooklyn’s Met Gala” by one social media user, the event also featured indie artist Mun Sing, electronic musician Jlin, and Eartheater.
She’s currently on tour with Charli XCX and Troye Sivan
Tickets went on sale for Charli XCX and Troye Sivan’s highly anticipated collaborative tour, ‘SWEAT’ back in April just a few months prior to the onset of ‘Brat summer.’ The North American leg of the tour kicked off September 14th in Detroit with Shygirl as the opening act.
She’s featured on Charli xcx’s ‘Brat’ remix album
Brat summer? Try ‘brat autumn.’ Following multiple hints and speculation, Charli XCX took to her Instagram to announce the features on her upcoming ‘Brat’ remix album. She followed the post up with another revealing the release day, October 11th at midnight which includes a collaborative remix of ‘365’ with Shygirl.
