Phoebe Bridgers and Paul Mescal's Relationship Timeline

2021 was the year of odd celebrity pairings. Phoebe Bridgers and Paul Mescal, however, just made sense. The Normal People actor and "Motion Sickness" singer were a rumored duo since the summer of 2020. We could confidently call them an official couple since they made their red carpet debut at the 2021 LACMA Art+Film Gala on November 6, 2022, but one of Hollywood's biggest It couples may have now called it quits. In June, Bridgers told NME that "the cute boy" from Normal People had followed her on Instagram, and revealed "I got a little pitter-patter in my heart when I saw." That summer, she was rumored to have flown out to Ireland to see her Irish beau. 

By November, Mescal was spilling to GQ about an unnamed girlfriend saying, "To have someone to lean on through such a mad, mad time has been invaluable. Really, I don’t know where I’d be without her."

In December, we got the first real evidence that Bridgers might be the aforementioned girlfriend when Mescal appeared in her "Savior Complex" video directed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Mescal can be seen in black and white, making his way home, tattered and beaten, in the company of a very tiny dog. Bridgers pops up only briefly, to offer a doggy treat. 

The following June, actress Mae Martin posted some behind the scene pictures of the BAFTAs on her Instagram, one of which showed Mescal and Bridgers arm in arm following Mescal's win for Leading Actor.

In October, the pair were again captured on a friend's Instagram, this time belonging to Ziwe Fumudoh. Mescal and Bridgers can be seen in a group shot, dressed as another iconic couple: Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox. Mescal slathered himself in MGK's plentiful tattoos, while Bridgers donned a black wig and faux-Mugler dress.

In November, Mescal and Bridger's did their first red carpet as a couple. The pair were photographed, looking as infatuated as ever, on the LACMA red carpet. The Gucci-clad duo posed for pictures together, for the first time ever outside of the Instagrams of others. If they've been entangled since the early Twitter days, it puts their romance at just around a year and half long. Here's to hoping for another year at least. These two offer a very sane and adorable alternative to the Pete Davidson and Kim Kardashians of the celebrity sphere. 

It happened—they're Instagram official! Towards the end of the year, Bridgers posted a sweet and cozy snap of the duo, unassumingly sans-caption. If the Twitter stans are right, these two have been entangled for nearly a year and a half.

Cut to November 2022, and the couple is reported to be engaged! According to a statement in The Guardian’s profile on Mescal, the engagement has yet to be officially confirmed by the couple, but hopefully, we hear wedding bells soon. 

Barely a month after reports of their engagement, speculation arose that the two have split up. On an episode of the Youtube series "Chicken Shop Date," Bridgers gave tips on getting over a heartbreak and what it has taught her. "You just have to do it. And it's gonna end at some point but you can't make it end, that's my tip," Bridgers said in the episode. 

On top of that, there are also rumors that Bridgers already has a new love interest: Bo Burnham. The two were allegedly caught cuddling and making out in LA not long after the rumored split from Mescal. Further belief of Bridgers and Mescal's split came after singer Matt Healy posted an unexpected photo of Bridgers and him kissing while Burnham stands behind them. 

In early February 2023, Vogue Australia shared a profile of Bridgers which included the line, “She’s rooting for former fiancée ‘Mr. Paul Mescal in Aftersun’ at the upcoming Oscars, ‘for sure.’” However, two days after its release, observant fans noticed that the phrase "former fiancée" had been removed. 

While the initial article seemed like confirmation to many that the two have officially called it quits, fans are now wondering whether this change is a good sign for their relationship status or a move by Bridgers' team to mitigate the drama around the alleged breakup.
