Sunday night in Manhattan saw quite the party, thanks to Othello's return to Broadway and a hugely successful as the opening night. Not only were Hollywood's biggest stars there for the momentous occasion, but the show, a revival of the 1982 production, continues to see record-breaking numbers as Broadway's highest-grossing play ever.
Celebrities flocked to New York City to support Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal in their rendition of William Shakespeare's masterful tragedy. An Oscar-winning Washington plays the titular role, while Gyllenhaal plays the villainous character Iago. With these two actors at the helm, the Broadway production had been highly anticipated until its debut. That's why even the biggest names in Hollywood couldn't wait to get their hands on a ticket for opening night.
Among the high-profile guests were Anna Wintour, Katie Holmes, Angela Bassett, Spike Lee, Colman Domingo, Jennifer Lopez, and more. Other VIPs included former President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden, as well as Martha Stewart.
The Broadway production of Shakespeare's Othello is directed by Kenny Leon and produced by Brian A. Moreland. The revival show will only be on Broadway for 15 weeks, from now through June 8. The play has grossed $2.8 million across preview shows in its first week, making history, and will undoubtedly continue to create an unprecedented legacy during its months-long run. Joining Washington and Gyllenhaal are Molly Osborne, Disney's Snow White actor Andrew Burnap, Anthony Michael Lopez, Daniel Pearce, and Kimber Elayne Sprawl. The cast also features Neal Bledsoe, Julee Cerda, Ezra Knight, Gene Gillette, and Rob Heaps.
