Olivia Rodrigo Debuts Baby Bangs in New ‘Obsessed’ Video
The singer's latest music video for "Obsessed" comes six months after the release of Guts.
In her latest video for the single "Obsessed," Olivia Rodrigo dons a refreshing new hairstyle in the form of uneven yet grunge-chic bangs. Perhaps meant to replicate the chaos of being the jealous-ridden girlfriend, Rorigo's "Obsessed" discusses a young woman's mania surrounding her boyfriend's ex-girlfriends. Rodrigo, known for her expressive music style, lyricism, and storytelling skills, depicts a girl whose self-esteem is shrouded in what-ifs regarding the status of her current beau and all his exes. The ladies meant to portray the ex-girlfriends all wear a white cottilllion-like dress, while Rodrigo wears an all-black prom dress with off-the-shoulder sleeves. Knowing Rodigo's penchant for speaking on the complexities of girlhood, this is likely meant to reference how young and naive the main character of the music video feels in comparison to the other girls who were in her beau's life.
These motifs are also seen through the makeup. As the ex-girlfriends in the music video fashion a glamourous supermodel-esque makeup look with elegant satin-colored lipstick, perfectly shaped eyebrows, some mascara, and cleanly applied eyeliner, Rodrigo's look doesn't employ the same maturity but is fun and reflective of the makeup a young woman in their late teens or early 20s would throw on. The strong lip liner paired with a winged cat eye and minimal foundation and blush relates to makeup that would be done in a taxi or quickly before class. The fringed baby bangs contrast with the perfectly quaffed heads of hair shown on the other girlfriends in the video.
While on The Drew Barrymore Show, Rodrigo discusses a myriad of life events and introspections that inspired Sour. "When you really think about it, you must put yourself in a position to be hurt, and nobody's perfect, and you must have done things wrong in that relationship too," Rodgrigo said in relation to looking back on her past heartbreaks. These sentiments can be seen in "Obsessed." While the protagonists of the song and video are hurt, the jealousy she feels for her lover's ex-girlfriends fuels the hurt. Rodrigo once again masters the narrative of a heartbroken girl, both visually via her hair, makeup, and costume and musically with her relatable lyrics.
