Kim Kardashian's Divorce Lawyer Laura Wasser Shares Secrets to Good Marriage
Last week, Kim Kardashian officially filed for divorce from her husband Kanye West. The legal mind behind those precedings? Celebrity divorce attorney Laura Wasser. The lawyer has famously represented major clients like Angelina Jolie, Ben Affleck, and Ryan Reynolds, as well as Kardashian in her break-up from her ex-husband Kris Humphries. She was also the inspiration behind Laura Dern's Acadamy Award-winning role in Marriage Story.
As someone who has seen the end of several high profile relationships, Wasser is now sharing her expertise on what makes a great relationship. She recently spoke to the Wall Street Journal about what it takes before and during a marriage to stay the course.
"Communicate. Talk about everything. Talk about things that aren’t sexy,” says Wasser. "Have the kind of unromantic talk that you would have if you were going to enter into a prenuptial agreement even if you’re not entering into a prenuptial agreement: What do you feel is expected of you in this relationship and what do you expect of your future spouse in this relationship? Everything from financial to family. My parents are older. I don’t want to put them in a home. Can they come live with us when they can’t take care of themselves? Are we having kids? Are they going to go to public or private [school]? How much are we going to put aside each month for retirement? You have huge student loans that you’re going to be paying with the money that we’re making during our marriage."
She goes on to explain how, in her experience, marriages with pre-nuptial contracts last longer because the couples have already been forced to have those long, arduous conversations. “It gives you the communication tools that you need when things aren’t going well," says the 52-year old. "And ultimately, in every relationship… you’re going to have times when things aren’t going well. So while things are going well, hone those skills so you know how to be able to come to each other during difficult times and talk about them.”
Recently, Wasser has been working on behalf of Kardashian in her ongoing divorce settlement negotiations. Both Kardashian and West have a combined financial portfoliio of over a billion dollars. Last week, it was reported that the couple was in the process of finalizing an agreement on how they would split their property, as well as time with their four children: North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm.
