9 Celebrity Power Couples Who Never Tied the Knot
You may not have realized these long-term celebrity couples never got married.
With secret weddings, on-and-off-again relationships, and high-profile breakups, the romantic lives of celebrities often make headlines. But flying under the radar are a number of famous power couples who have stayed together for years, without ever saying their "I dos." From Oprah Winfrey and Stedman to Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling, L’OFFICIEL rounds up the nine most surprising long-term celebrity couples who never got married.
Oprah Winfrey & Stedman Graham
Together for nearly 35 years, Oprah Winfrey and partner Stedman Graham started dating in 1986. While Graham proposed to Winfrey, who accepted, in 1992, the two decided not to tie the knot. Winfrey has said that she wanted to be asked, but that she was not willing to sacrifice her career goals with The Oprah Winfrey Show, and even went so far to tell Vogue in 2017 that she believed if they had walked down the aisle, the relationship wouldn't have lasted.
Kurt Russell & Goldie Hawn
One of Hollywood’s favorite long-term couples, Overboard co-stars Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn have been together since 1983 and raised three children together, two of which are from Hawn’s previous marriage. The two did not initially see themselves as romantic partners, with Hawn and Russell meeting on the set of the Disney film The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band when Hawn was 21 and Russell was 16. However, the two reconnected on the set of 1984's Swing Shift and despite both stating that they they would never go out with a fellow actor, they ended up on a first date at the Playboy Club. In response to why the couple never got married, Hawn stated in 1990 that, “I already feel devoted and isn’t that what marriage is supposed to do?” Before going onto say that, “I like waking up every day and seeing that he is there and knowing I have a choice. There is really no reason to marry.”
Ryan Gosling & Eva Mendes
Hollywood couple Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have been together for over a decade, since meeting on set of the 2012 drama The Place Beyond the Pines. The couple decided to raise their two daughters, Esmeralda and Amada, with privacy over their relationship and their family. Enjoying the parenthood together, the two have not commented on their lack of a marriage certificate, preferring to keep their decision not to walk down the aisle private.
Shakira and Gerard Piqué
Sharika and Barcelona soccer player Gerard Piqué may have two kids together, Milan and Sasha, but they have no intention of ever making a trip down the aisle. The two met when Sharika was in South Africa filming her music video for the 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem “Waka Waka” and have been a steady item since 2010. As Sharika discussed in her 60 Minutes interview, “Marriage scares the sh–t out of me.” In preferring the title girlfriend over wife, Sharika stated that she wants to keep her other half on his toes, so he is aware that anything’s possible depending on behavior.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley & Jason Statham
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Jason Statham began dating after meeting at a party in London in 2009. Despite their 20-year age gap, the two have been together for over 10 years, focusing on keeping their relationship out of the public eye. They share a son, Jack Oscar Statham, and while Huntington-Whiteley has been seen wearing an engagement ring since 2016, the couple has made no moves towards marriage, with the model stating that while she believes in marriage, being in a happy relationship is much more important to her. Additionally, while the two have discussed a possible future getting married, they do not think it's a priority and are rather focusing their energy on raising their son.
Ricky Gervais & Jane Fallon
The English comedian Ricky Gervais is happily unmarried, dating long-term girlfriend Jane Fallon for over 38 years. Gervais and Fallon, who met at the University College London, first moved in together in 1984. The reason for not getting married? Gervais stated that, “We are married in everything but the ceremony. We share everything and everything is in both names.” Gervais, famously an atheist, therefore, does not see marriage as an institution he and Fallon need. The comedian additionally said to The Sunday Times in 2010 that their “fake marriage” has lasted longer than a real one, and that he sees no point in “having an actual ceremony before the eyes of God because there is no God.”
Maya Rudolph and Paul Thomas Anderson
Maya Rudolph and Paul Thomas Anderson have been together since 2001, share four children, and Rudolph has even occasionally used the title “husband” to refer to her partner, however, the two have never made it official. When asked about it, Rudolph told The New York Times in 2018 that it is not necessary and that they are a couple that “are not going anywhere.”
Tilda Swinton and Sandro Kopp
Scottish actress Tilda Swinton and German New-Zealand artist and actor Sandro Kopp met on the set of The Chronicles on Narnia, Twenty years Swinton’s junior, Kopp began dating the actress in 2004 and they have remained together since. Over the last decade, together they raised Swinton’s two children from a previous partner, John Bryne. The three, Swinton, Kopp, and Byrne all live together in what Swinton has said to Harper’s Bazaar is a “sane” arrangement, as they are all a family. Swinton later went on to say that since she has met Kopp, they have all been under one roof and while she knows some people will struggle to understand it, it works for their family. So forth, it is not surprising that Swinton and Kopp aren't eager to attach themselves to the conventional title of marriage.
Jack McCollough & Lazaro Hernandez
Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the design duo behind Proenza Schouler, met at a club right before both began attending famed art college Parsons School of Design the next fall. The pair ended up dating during their junior year. Later, the two collaborated together for their senior thesis under Dean of Parsons at the time, Tim Gunn, marking their first time designing under the label Proenza Schouler. The collection, which was ordered by Barneys, showed the world the birth of fashion's newest superstars, both in life and business. The two have been together now for over 20 years, enjoying their long-term relationship, alongside their numerous CFDA Awards.
