5 Things to Know About Camila Morrone
There's more to the 25-year-old than being the breakout star of Daisy Jones & The Six.
Maybe you were first introduced to Camila Morrone from her breakout role as Camila Alvarez in Daisy Jones & The Six. For those of us who've felt like we've heard her name before, perhaps it is her previous four-year-long relationship with Leonardo DiCaprio in which her name may sound familiar. Regardless, Morrone is a rising star to watch who is finding room under the spotlight outside of her ties with her former beau. Below, L'OFFICIEL compiles five things to know about the Daisy Jones & The Six actress.
She sees Al Pacino as her stepfather.
Actor Al Pacino dated Morrone's mother for years, long enough that Morrone still refers to him as her stepfather. When she received her first acting role in the 2013 movie Bukowski, she went to Pacino to ask for advice. "Of course, the first person I called was my stepdad, who has been an actor for a long time and is [a] very established actor," Morrone said in an interview on The Late Late Show With James Corden. When asked about what advice was given, she said, "Just be yourself. ... Just react to the act, and you'll be fine."
She didn't originally plan to pursue acting.
As the daughter of two Argentinian actors, Morrone is very well attuned to Hollywood and what the job entails—something that she originally saw as a turn-off. "I saw [my parents] struggle their whole lives to be financially independent actors, and seeing them go through that, I was kind of turned off to it," Morrone told LA Times. "There was so much angst around acting, and it was such a topic of conversation — never knowing where your next paycheck is going to come from. I thought: 'I'm going to go to college. I'm going to have a normal 9-to-5 job.' And of course, I ended up exactly like them."
She started her career as a model.
Before she was an actress, Morrone was a successful model. She started her modeling journey in high school and would eventually land runway opportunities and gigs with Victoria's Secret. It was after landing a role in the 2018 film Death Wish that Morrone officially quit modeling and was fully committed to acting.
She apprenticed with a taxidermist.
For her starring role as Mickey Peck in the 2019 film Mickey and the Bear, Morrone was playing a responsible teenager working to take care of her father suffering from PTSD. Part of her character's job was working after school as a taxidermy apprentice, in which Morrone actually did work with a local taxidermist: "She worked on mounting the skin of a deer onto a clay head, which she said she did without complaint, even though she was 'grossed out' by the texture of the animal's skin and eyeballs," the LA Times wrote.
She's been called the next Jennifer Lawrence.
Morrone's critically acclaimed performance in Mickey and the Bear was met with the highest regard of being compared to Jennifer Lawrence. It's a daunting task measuring up to any well-known actor, especially an A-list one like The Hunger Games star. "Initially, it's like the highest form of flattery," Morrone told Refinery29. "[Jennifer Lawrence is] one of the best actors of my generation. But then it settles and you're like, Wow, now I have to follow that up. I feel like there is pressure now — you give a performance that people respond to, and they're like, 'Okay, well now what are you going to do? Let's see if you can keep this up.'"
