From her first public relationship with Topher Grace in the '90s to her now-husband Adam Shulman, join L'OFFICIEL in diving into The Idea of You actress' relationship history.
Like many of her contemporaries, beloved Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway is notoriously private—often preferring to keep her personal life separate from her professional career and public persona, but as the star of cult classics like The Devil Wears Prada, Ella Enchanted, and The Princess Diaries—the breakout role that launched her career—and more serious films like Les Misérables, One Day, Becoming Jane, and The Dark Knight Rises, it's no surprise that the public has long been curious about Hathaway's star-studded dating history.
Join L'OFFICIEL in exploring the Academy Award-winning actress' relationship history, tracing from her current marriage to jewelry designer Adam Shulman, all the way back to her first public relationship with Topher Grace in the '90s.
Topher Grace
Though she is now happily married to Shulman, Hathway was first romantically linked in 1999, to Topher Grace. They made their debut as a couple at the Teen Choice Awards that same year, much to the delight of fans. The pair dated until 2001, when they split amicably.
Hathaway reunited with the That '70s Show star in 2010 on the set of Valentine's Day, where the pair starred opposite one another, playing a young couple on Valentine's Day. During the movie's press tour, the duo was asked how they portrayed their characters' on-screen relationship with a sense of authenticity, to which Grace answered, "it was pretty easy... we had a lot of comfort with each other," likely alluding to the relationship history between him and Hathaway.
Scott Sartiano
Following her launch to stardom, thanks to the widespread success of The Princess Diaries (2001), Hathaway was a major focus of the media, and throughout 2002, was rumored to be dating several prominent figures—including New York City-based restauranteur Scott Sartiano.
The pair was spotted in public on several occasions throughout the year and were photographed together at the Road to Perdition premiere that same year. Eventually, the pair split and went their separate ways, with neither party commenting publically on the relationship.
Hugh Dancy
After meeting on the set of Ella Enchanted, Hathaway and her co-star, Hugh Dancy, reportedly dated from 2002 to 2004. In a 2004 interview with Black Film, Hathaway shared that the two shared a romantic spark from the beginning, saying "we had [chemistry] from the first time we met, his audition."
In the same interview, Hathaway describes her excitement at working with Dancy and the process the two went through to work on capturing an engaging on-screen romance. According to the actress, the two spent a lot of time alone together watching old romance films, Roman Holiday included, but Hathaway noted that "ultimately, when we got to the set we just sort of looked into each other's eyes and hoped that it would be there."
The pair reportedly broke up in 2004, but kept the details of both the relationship and their parting under wraps. In a 2022 interview with Access Hollywood, Dancy reflected on the 20th anniversary of Ella Enchanted, and remarked that he had not seen his co-star in a long time.
Raffaello Follieri
Perhaps her most buzzed-about relationship prior to her marriage to Adam Shulman, Hathaway was romantically linked to Italian real estate developer Raffaello Follieri from 2004 to 2008. According to Vanity Fair, the two began dating in early 2004 after an introduction from a mutual friend. Follieri was famously late for their first date, but according to friends, quickly won the actress over with a bouquet of roses and his Italian accent, and were constantly spotted together over the next few years, appearing to be very much in love.
As Follieri's real estate business toed over legal lines, Hathaway—who at one point had been on the board of Follieri's company—resigned and appeared to distance herself as legal investigations progressed in 2008. Finally, several weeks before his arrest for fraud and money laundering, Hathaway ended the relationship.
Josh Lucas
Before marrying Shulman, and following her public split from longtime boyfriend Follieri in 2008, Hathaway was reportedly in a brief relationship with Josh Lucas, a co-star from the PoliWood documentary, which followed the events at national conventions during the 2008 presidential race. JustJared reported in late 2008 that the two were spotted at a restaurant in Denver, where an eyewitness shared with Life & Style that “They definitely looked like a couple. They were really into each other, giggling and smiling and even holding hands at one point. You could almost taste their chemistry!” However, this sighting was the couple's first and only public appearance, as the two seemingly went their separate ways shortly after.
Adam Shulman
Just a few months after the difficult separation from Follieri and the one-time sighting with Lucas, Hathaway met her now-husband, Adam Shulman, at the Palm Springs Film Festival. In a 2013 interview with Harper's Bazaar, the actress confided that "I knew from the second I met him that he was the love of my life. I also knew that I couldn’t have met him at a worse time..." she continued, saying "I took my trust out for a ridiculous joyride with him."
After meeting in 2008, the pair began dating, although many details of their early relationship have been kept under wraps. After 3 years together, Shulman designed an engagement ring for Hathaway and popped the question. In 2012, the Shulman and Hathaway married in Big Sur, California with an intimate woodland ceremony, with vows exchanged amid the redwoods.
In the same 2013 interview, Hathaway described her relationship with Adam Shulman, saying "He walks into a room, and I light up, I can’t help it." While in London shooting Les Misérables, the actress recalls that she had to take time away from her husband, as the role demanded a level of inner despair she couldn't tap into with him around. She described the experience, saying "A few days into it I said, 'I’m having too much fun, I just want to play with you and I need to be really sad right now.'"
In 2016, Hathaway and Adam Shulman welcomed their first child, Jonathan. Following Hathaway's open struggle with fertility and conception, the couple announced the birth of their second son, Jack, in 2019.
While the couple has developed a reputation as being notoriously private, the two have been spotted increasingly more often since 2022, with Adam Shulman often appearing beside Hathaway at events ranging from the Met Gala to the front row at runway shows. Most recently, the pair, married now for over a decade, was photographed at a New York City gala, looking closer than ever.
