Mattel is Making a Barbie for Maya Angelou
The beloved American poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou, who passed away in May 2014, is being honored by Mattel with her own Barbie doll.
The novelty includes accessories and includes a gold ring, watch, earrings, bracelet, and a copy of her memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
The collector series Barbie Inspiring Women honors women whose work has inspired the world. Other dolls in the series include Rosa Parks, Sally Ride, Susan B. Anthony, and Ella Fitzgerald.
Angelou is remembered for her activism and extraordinary literary talent. A recipient of the Presidential Medal of Honor, Dr. Angelou was nominated for the National Book Award for her 1970 autobiography. In 1993, she became the first African American and poet to speak at the US Presidential Inauguration.
