Zayn Teases His New Single With a Silent 'Tonight Show' Appearance

Last night, Zayn Malik managed to make fans go crazy without saying a word. During a silent Tonight Show appearance with Jimmy Fallon, the singer teased his new upcoming single, “What I Am,” by wordlessly walking up to the comedian on his late night stage and silently handing over a note with the announcement. Malik's new album, Room Under The Stairs, will be available on May 17th.

Fans took to Twitter to point out that only Zayn’s new team could get him on a talk show without him having to talk, referencing his oftentimes shy and quiet demeanor which the pop star has been known to have in public appearances over the years. Malik hasn't released new music since 2021, when he debuted his album Nobody Is Listening. Since then the singer has been fairly quiet, other than possibly dating Selena Gomez, and co-parenting his 3 year old daughter Khai with supermodel and long-time ex girlfriend, Gigi Hadid. 

For his upcoming release, Zayn has posted several reels to his Instagram teasing the single, “What I Am” and the song’s lyrics, “If I told you I loved you, would you say that it’s fucked up?” In an exclusive with Rolling Stone late last month, Malik revealed that the upcoming LP is being produced by Grammy-winner Dave Cobb, a record producer from Nashville, Tennesse who has worked with Lady Gaga, Chris Stapleton, and Brandi Carlile, to name a few. The collaboration with Cobb signals a new sonic era for Malik. “What got me about Zayn was his voice, you can hear love, loss, pain, triumph and humanity in it. I feel as if this record is removing the glass from his spirit directly to his fans,” Cobb shared with Rolling Stone, “Zayn has really created his own universe on this record, he really has no fear and is speaking straight from his soul.”
