Steve Aoki and BTS Drop An All-Asian Music Video for “Waste It On Me”
Asian Americans are finally getting some positive media attention. A far-cry from the days of racist caricatures in film and media, it seems entertainment executives are finally eager to showcase Asian talent in American media.
The videdo for Steve Aoki and Korean sensation BTS’s new collaboration, titled "Waste It On Me," is one superb example that will no doubt find itself in Spotify playlists nationwide.
In the new video, multiple Asian stars make their cameos: Devon Aoki, Ken Jeong, Jimmy O. Yang, Vincent Rodriguez III, Tiffany Ma, Leonardo Nam, Ross Butler, Jamie Chung, Steve Aoki himself, Jared Eng, Jessica Lu, Jimmy Yang, and more.
In a statement, Aoki expressed his excitement about the project. “When I found out that ‘Waste It On Me’ was the number one song in the world on Apple Music I realized that this track represented more than just me and BTS,” reported Just Jared. “It’s bigger than music, it represents a Korean band and one Asian American DJ that can show other Asians they are also apart of the global commercial musical landscape. I feel so deeply about the Asian footprint in music culture that I wanted the music video to have an entirely Asian cast and director. The video tells the story of 'Waste It On Me' in an incredibly funny, witty, and clever manner.”
