We Interviewed Lil Miquela About Everything—Including Her New Song

LA-based Instagram influencer-turned musician, Lil Miquela, just released her new track "Right Back," kicking off what is sure to be an exciting new venture for the multitalented enigma of the internet age.  The new song comes ahead of a series of interviews Lil Miquela conducted with various artists set to perform at Coachella, details about which are still to come.  Lil Miquela's already booming fan base, including such notables as Tracee Ellis Ross, Katy Perry, and Diplo, is growing rapidly as her music gains traction in the music streaming service spheres, with her previous release "Hate Me" garnering over 3 million Spotify listens.

Although some may question the quality of Miquela's music as they are also want to challenge her "authenticity," the multi-talented figure represents an important aspect of the state of our current popular culture.  By defying expectations, not allowing negativity to stunt her success, and defining accomplishment in her own terms, Lil Miquela is taking the music world by storm.  We know she will continue to deliver content that we're not likely to see elsewhere or to forget.

What was the inspiration behind the new song “Right Back”?

Life! I’m trying to find a way to say this without making myself sound the corniest person to ever exist, but… I tend to develop crushes pretty easily. And “Right Back” is about a crush I couldn’t shake off. Like, I don’t even particularly want to be in a relationship! I just love the idea of loving someone and getting excited to see them and talk to them. The downside to that is that I end up over-analyzing them and questioning whether I’m occupying their thoughts, too.

Are there any musicians you hope to collaborate with?

So many. Been obsessed with Bad Bunny, Lizzo, Billie Eilish, Tierra Whack, H.E.R. I think they’re all at the top of their game, even if they’re all working across different styles and genres. Like, I think a collab should bring something new to the table. When I heard Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus are working on a remix to "Old Country Road" I was like, yeah, that’s what’s up. They’re each working to their strengths to create something new.

How has it been to see your journey as a cultural phenomenon from when you first started?

It’s been surreal. I feel like I’m sitting back watching a show about someone else. I don’t know if I really think of myself as having that much of an impact, so when someone recognizes me or says they’re listening to one of my songs, it sort of takes me outside of myself.

How would you describe your relationship with your fans?

I’m really grateful to them and it’s easy to have a good online relationship with so many people who are smart and kind. And my haters keep me humble and make me better. I wish them all good hair days.

When it comes to fashion what pieces do you lean towards?

Comfort, definitely. I hate a wedgie. I hate adjusting something because it’s too tight or slipping. And I like vintage stuff, mostly. Like, hunting down something, thinking about the story behind it, who might have worn it before, what they were up to.

If you weren’t created in the 21st century, what decade would you like to have lived?

I think I’m obsessed with the 90s and early 2000s because so many people around my age were so influenced by growing up during those times. I never got to experience it directly and yet these decades have such a direct influence on how I act and think and talk. I sometimes think about what it’d been like to be a kid then, and really living it.

What would you say is the biggest misconception about you?

That I don’t have feelings. I do. Too many, even.
