Janet Jackson Comments on Super Bowl Controversy with Justin Timberlake
Janet Jackson said the reaction against Justin Timberlake was "out of proportion."
In her newest documentary, Janet Jackson recounts moments from her life and career. In the production, she recalls the sensitive incident with singer Justin Timberlake at the 2004 Super Bowl and how it completely affected her career.
While performing together at the 2004 Super Bowl Halftime Show, Timberlake was supposed to rip part of Jackson's shirt off at the finish to reveal her bra. However, a wardrobe malfunction led to the move exposing Jackson's breast on live television to more than 140 million people.
In the aftermath, Jackson was banned from playing at any future Super Bowls. She was also forced to make a public apology, and many radio stations and TV channels removed her music from their rotation. However, sales of Timberlake's records continued to soar.
"We talked once and Justin said, 'I don't know if I should speak up and make a statement.' And then I was like, 'Look, I don't want any drama for you. If I were you, I wouldn't say anything,'" shared the singer.
However, 18 years after the incident, Janet says she and Justin are close friends and that situation is long gone. "Justin and I are very good friends and we always will be. We talked a few days ago. He and I have moved on and it's time for everyone to do the same."
