Camila Cabello Opens Up About Her Breakup With Shawn Mendes
Camila Cabello is speaking out for the first time since splitting from Shawn Mendes: “Priorities change.”
In a recent interview, singer Camila Cabello opened up about her breakup with fellow singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes. After two years together, the high-profile couple announced the end of their relationship in November 2021, through a joint statement on social media.
Cabello explained that the relationship ended naturally and that their goals changed over time. “As I get older, yes, priorities change," she told Apple Music's Zane Lowe. "And I feel like that’s how it happened for both of us.”
She also revealed that during their relationship, her focus was simply: “How can I live a happy life and have a happy, healthy relationship?"
Cabello and Mendes started dating in July 2019, shortly after releasing their duet "Señorita." Despite the breakup, the "Havana" singer says she has no regrets about their time together and that she still loves the singer. "We both started dating very young. It's like we're really learning to be healthy adults," she reflected.
Many fans believe that some of the lyrics from her new single, “Bam Bam” featuring Ed Sheeran, allude to her recent breakup. In the song, she sings, “We were kids at the start, I guess we’re grown-ups now / Couldn’t ever imagine even havin’ doubts, but not everything works out.”
In her conversation with Lowe, Cabello reflected on the lyrics, explaining that the song is about how “things change and things take really unexpected turns” in life. She added, “I love Shawn, and I feel like there is literally nothing but love for him. And this song is mostly just about, like, ‘OK, how do I make a song that shows the cycles of love and life?’”
