5 Shocking Snubs at the 2023 Grammys
From Beyoncé to Taylor Swift, these were the biggest upsets of the night.
This year there were no slaps in sight, and we could not be more thankful for it. Our favorite A-listers hit the red carpet first, showing us our bold and beautiful looks. Cardi B arrived wearing a stunning blue Gaurav Gupta gown while Harry Styles made his debut in a sparkly Egonlab jumpsuit covered with Swarovski crystals. Trevor Noah hosted the show for a third year, and he did his best to energize the audience and to make everyone laugh. The 2023 Grammys were cool, calm, and collected, but even so, there were a few moments that left fans at home—and probably some in the audience—with a bad taste in their mouth. Continue on to see the top five biggest snubs at the 2023 Grammy Awards.
Even though the beloved Queen Bey has now won 32 gramophones, the highest number of Grammy wins in history, she still did not beat Harry Styles' Harry's House when it came to Best Album. Beyoncé fans came to her defense, saying that her album Renaissance should have gained more recognition. One fan wrote on Twitter, "Congratulations harry, it's a good album. but #Renaissance will be celebrated in queer clubs and at pride events for decades to come- that will be this album's greatest legacy, not the award #GRAMMYS."
Swifties were disappointed when their favorite singer-songwriter didn't win Song of the Year or Best Country Song, even though she took home the award for Best Music Video. "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" was nominated for Song of the Year but, surprisingly, Bonnie Raitt won for her song "Just Like That."
Everyone was shocked when newer R&B singer-songwriter Muni Long won Best R&B Performance against legends Mary J. Blige, Beyoncé, and Jazmine Sullivan for her song “Hrs & Hrs.” Not that she didn't deserve it, of course, but how can you compete with those three? We expect to see a lot more of Long in the coming years, and we're so excited to see where she goes in her career.
The list of nominations for Best New Artist was strong this year, including names like Anitta, Omar Apollo, and Måneskin. There was some skepticism about who would take home the prize, considering the stacked category, but a majority believed the award would go to Måneskin. To everyone's surprise, 23-year-old jazz musician Samara Joy took home the golden gramophone.
K-pop superstar group BTS lost the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance to Sam Smith and Kim Petras for their viral hit "Unholy." BTS was nominated for their song "My Universe" with Coldplay. Following the loss, K-pop stans took to social media, speculating that the award show could be rigged. Unfortunately, the group didn't make an appearance this year, but we'll cross our fingers for a BTS win next year.
