Club Kids Meet Kung Fu in Louis Vuitton Men's Spring/Summer 2022 Show
Virgil Abloh's latest collection unfolds in a cinematic forest where kung fu and raving collide.
The Louis Vuitton Men’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection presents a duality of the modern men’s tailoring designer Virgil Abloh has established at the maison, and the streetwear influence that appeals to younger fashion consumers. Showing tracksuits alongside traditional suits, Abloh merges a club-kid aesthetic and formal dressing. Down to the shoes, a brand-new co-branded Louis Vuitton and Nike Air Force 1 sneaker, the house codes are reinvigorated with Abloh's vision of menswear.
Creating a fashion film to unveil the collection, models appear in a sparse forest backdrop, playing out a storyline that was inspired by a Japanese kung fu movie, Lone Wolf and Cub. A face-off in a dojo pits the two sartorial camps against each other—the suits against the young ravers. To top off the atmosphere, artists GZA, Goldie, Saul Williams, Lupe Fiasco, and Shabaka Hutching feature on the show's soundtrack, as well as appear in the collection's film.
Along with the juxtaposed suits versus tracksuits, fluid silhouettes in the form of dresses and skirts are also styled amidst the menswear, speaking to luxury fashion's move towards gender fluidity. Accessories include new soft trunks and artistic Keepall bags, which complement the collection's saturated palette of rainbows and neons.
