The 2000s were a simpler time—music was dominated by boybands, tabloids were covered by Paris Hilton, and, unfortunately for Justin Timberlake, fashion was marked by an unforgettable 2001 denim on denim ensemble he shared with then-girlfriend Britney Spears. The legacy of the denim cowboy outfit lives on in Halloween costumes, pop culture, and, of course, the Internet. In a recent roundtable interview for The Hollywood Reporter, the singer spoke candidly about how he looks back on his early red carpet style.

"I confess that there was maybe a period in the ’90s where I could skip over some of the outfits that were public, but the internet will never," says the Palmer actor.

Fellow panelist Janelle Monàe assures Timberlake that those looks were "too iconic," before friend and singer John Legend interrupts to reference the signature look directly, saying, "Denim on denim on denim on denim—that will never be forgotten!"

“Thanks, John,” replies an embarrassed Timberlake. “Uh, no, the internet won’t allow me to forget them. So it’s all good.”

The interview also featured songwriters Leslie Odom Jr. and Mary J. Blige in coversation about the future of music during such a tumultuous time.
