This week, in Los Angeles, Swiss watch brand Hublot announced its new collaboration with famed street artist Shepard Fairey, most well-known for his “Obey” prints and “Hope” design for President Obama in 2018. Together, the two are launching the limited-edition Big Bang Meca-10. With the launch, Fairey joins the likes of Dwayne Wade, Depeche Mode, Bar Refaeli and Sang Bleu as collaborators.

While most of the artist’s work is political, or acts as social commentary, Fairey’s design for Hublot took a neutral ground — focusing more on the artist’s aesthetic and translating that into a time piece. Prior to the event, Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe, said “We didn’t want to implement a specific message through the product, but we for sure share the same philosophy and values.”

A day before the launch, at his fine art studio in an undisclosed location in Los Angeles, Fairey shared his design process: “I wanted it to be subtle, if you look closely and know my work, it will be recognizable.” Embedded into the Meca-10 is the artist’s signature “STAR GEAR,” along with decorative motifs that sit appear often in his collage work.

The Big Bang Meca-10 Shepard Fairey comes in black or navy colorways, and features Hublot’s patented “one click” mechanism, allowing the wearer to easily switch between straps. Each timepiece will come with a signed letterpress print of the “STAR GEAR” collage framed in concrete.
