Who is 'Hit Man' Star Adria Arjona?
Adria Arjona stars alongside Glen Powell in the upcoming Netflix film “Hit Man.”
Richard Linklater’s new noir comedy “Hit Man,” stars co-writer and producer, Glen Powell, as Gary Johnson, a mild-mannered professor who discovers he has a hidden talent for moonlighting as a hit man. This film is not one to miss, but who is Powell’s co-star Adria Arjona?
The 32-year-old Puerto Rican actress best known for her roles in “Morbius,” “True Detective,” “Good Omens,” and “Andor'' amongst others, moved to New York City at 18. While in New York, she worked to pursue her acting career and studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Now with her upcoming Netflix film, “Hit Man” alongside Powell, she has people excited for a hit which would turn her and Powell into household names.
Loosely based on the true story that goes by the same name written in 2001 in Texas Monthly, when prospective client, Madison, played by Arjona, tries to hire a hit man, Powell’s character’s alter ego, Ron, steps in. Much of what follows as Ron/Gary and Madison begin a romantic relationship will have viewers wondering what’s next. In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, for Powell and Arjona, the chemistry came easy.
“I met Rick on Zoom first, and then he set it up where I went out and met Glen, and we ended up talking for about four hours,” Arjona told Netflix. “We were both doing Sober January, and an hour into our dinner, we were both cutting loose, drinking tequila, and celebrating the fact that we were going to do this movie together.”
For Linklater, the most crucial moment was casting Madison, and Arjona was the key to the romance at its heart.
“It had to be someone a guy would risk everything they’ve worked for to be with. And yet, she had to be very sympathetic. Ultimately, what we were asking her to do is just be a real person,” said Linklater to Netflix. “Ultimately, it’s a relationship movie.”
In an interview with InStyle, Arjona describes herself as “really clumsy and I just move very differently than Madison does.” In comparison, Arjona describes her character to Netflix as possessing, “an energy…that is kind of contagious, erratic, and spontaneous. I’ve never played a character like that.”
“Hit Man” will be released on Netflix in select countries Friday, June 7 with an advance New York Special Screening of the film on Monday, June 3rd at 7:00 PM EST. Following the screening will be a special Q&A with Academy-Award nominated director, producer, and writer Richard Linklater and stars Adria Arjona and Retta.
