According to <a href="https://deadline.com/2021/06/the-weeknd-pop-star-cult-drama-the-idol-sam-levinson-hbo-1234783685/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Deadline</a>, the "Blinding Lights" artist (born Abel Tesfaye) has co-created a new series for HBO titled The Idol which he will also write, produce, and star in. He developed the new show with <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/euphoria-season-2-details-plot-cast-premiere-date-trailer-zendaya-hbo-max" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Euphoria</a> creator Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim, a former nightclub owner and The Weeknd&rsquo;s producing partner.
The show will follow "a female pop singer who starts a romance with an enigmatic L.A. club owner who is the leader of a secret cult."
Because the show is still in its early stages of development, few other details are available. No casting announcements nor a filming or release schedule have been made so far. However, Tesfaye's history of theatrical performances signals that the show is in good hands.

In 2020, the singer released his most recent album, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/music/the-weeknd-boycotts-grammys-after-2021-snub" target="_blank" rel="noopener">After Hours</a>, accompanied by a series of music videos and red carpet appearances featuring Tesfaye in either face bandages or extensive makeup that offered a post-plastic surgery look. The concept was intended as a performative extension of the album commenting on the standards and expectations of beauty in the entertainment industry. The artist credited films like Casino, Joker, and Uncut Gems (in which he made a cameo appearance) as inspirations for the record.
While live concerts over the last year have been limited due to the coronavirus, the singer did offer fans an epic live performance of some of his biggest hits during the <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/best-fashion-moments-superbowl-lv-the-weeknd-givenchy-amanda-gorman-moschino" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2021 Super Bowl Halftime Show</a> in February of this year. He marched onto the field accompanied by a field of over 200 backup dancers in his signature After Hours attire: a black dress shirt, tie, and trousers with a bright red jacket. All this to say if there's one thing The Weeknd knows how to do, it's put on a show.
