Madame Web is a hero from the Spider-Man comics, whose moniker refers to her attachment to a life-support system given her old age. Her powers come from her psychic abilities, unlike many other action-driven characters from the comics. Madame Web will be Sony's first film led by a female cast.

Following the successes of Euphoria's second season, which placed Sweeney's character at the forefront of the show's drama, Sweeney is widely desired for a variety of upcoming acting roles according to Deadline. Sweeney's role as Cassie in the HBO drama brought unforgettable performances, viral moments, and a slew of beauty and fashion inspiration content on social media.

In an Instagram post from February, Johnson ambiguously confirmed her casting as the lead by posting a web emoji. Though Sweeney's role in the new Spider-Man film is not clear yet, the buzz surrounding Madame Web and her rise in the Hollywood ranks is enough to look forward to until more information regarding the film will be revealed.
