'Squid Game' Renewed for Season 2
Netflix's most popular series is returning for another season.
Heads up! Netflix just gave the green light—pun intended—for the second season of Squid Game.
In an interview with the AP, writer Hwang Dong-hyuk said, “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!”
Soon after the show's premiere on the streaming platform, it topped the hit period drama Bridgerton as Netflix's most-watched series, reaching 142 million households within four weeks.
Squid Game takes place in a dystopian society where a group of 456 contestants in dire financial straits compete with their lives in a series of gruesomely reimagined children's games to win ₩45.6 billion (roughly $38.7 million).
In Season 1 of the Korean series, viewers watched players Seong Gi-hun (456), Cho Sang-woo (218), and Kang Sae-byeok (067) battle it out for the chance to win the prize money and save their families. For Season 2, Dong-hyuk says that he would be open to seeing Gi-hun return to “do something for the world.”
While the series as a whole has been an uncontested success, one of the biggest breakout stars is actress HoYeon Jung who plays Kang. Shortly after the show's debut, the 26-year-old star was announced as the newest global ambassador for Louis Vuitton.
