The Marvel star is accusing the studio of breaking their million-dollar contract.

In recent years, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/beauty/scarlett-johansson-launching-skincare-beauty-brand" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Scarlett Johansson</a> has asserted herself as one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood. This is primarily due to her leading role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe&mdash;now controlled by Disney&mdash;as <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/new-movies-tv-shows-july-2021-netflix-hbo-max" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Black Widow</a>.
Her feature film as the famous heroine debuted earlier this month, but it looks like the fight backstage has just begun. Johansson is suing Disney for breach of contract after the studio placed the feature on its new streaming platform, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/disney-plus-movies-streaming-now" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Disney+</a>, concurrently with theaters.

The star's contract allowed her to receive part of box office sales. During the pandemic, several studios, including Disney, chose to release their films online. With the launch on the platform, revenue dropped dramatically, thus affecting Scarlett's earnings. However, the film still grossed $218 million in its opening weekend.
In an official statement, Disney says, "The process is especially sad and harrowing in its cruel disregard for the horrific and lingering global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson's contract and, in addition, the release of Black Widow at Disney+ with Premier Access significantly increased her ability to earn additional compensation beyond the $20 million she has received to date.&rdquo;
The studio released Black Widow on its streaming platform, however, like with its other mid-pandemic releases <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/cruella-movie-sequel-emma-stone" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cruella</a> and Mulan, to watch the film, subscribers had to also purchase Premier Access.
