Let's take a step back in time for a moment: It was April 2020. Everyone was trapped inside their homes quarantining. Everyone was bored of daily walks and staying in their homes. That is until Netflix released Outer BanksThe show, set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, took viewers on a scavenger hunt, as John B. (Chase Stokes), JJ (Rudy Pankow), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), and Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline) work to find lost gold, taking them on crazy quests along the way. The seaside views, beachy fashion, and loads of adventure transported viewers out of their current COVID-19 bubble and into a faraway land.

There's no wonder it was a huge success. And after returning again for a second season in 2021, the cast later announced that they would be back again for a third. While Season 2 brought a ton of near-death experiences and adventures in foreign countries (remember the Bahamas?), fans will have to wait and see what this next season has in store for the Pogues and Kooks.

In September 2022, Outer Banks Season 3 reportedly wrapped up filming. Now, Netflix has finally dropped the trailer and it's clear that this season is amping up the action. With the anticipation growing, L'OFFICIEL breaks down what we know so far.

The Cast.

Pogue fans, you're in luck. It appears that all of the regular Pogues—John B., JJ, Kiara, Pope, and Sarah Cameron will be back for the third season, in addition to an honorary Pogue newcomer, Cleo (Carlacia Grant), who helped John B. and Sarah in the Bahamas and later in the season finale. Drew Starkey, who plays Sarah's older, much eviler brother Rafe, and Austin North, Sarah's ex-boyfriend Topper, will also be returning to the cast. How do we know this? Back in February 2022, the show shared an Instagram post with the Kooks and Pogues frolicking through a field together with the caption, "Wouldn’t wanna be stranded with anyone else. OBX3 is now in production 🤙."

In addition to the original cast members, Netflix recently announced three new individuals would be joining the cast: Andy McQueen, Lou Ferrigno Jr., and Fiona Palomo. McQueen will take on the role of Carlos Singh, a "ruthless Caribbean Don on a treasure hunt of his own," according to a tweet from Netflix. Ferrigno Jr. will portray Ryan, "Singh's top security officer." And last, but certainly not least, Palomo will portray Sofia, "a self-identified pogue who forms a close connection to Rafe." Will sparks fly between the two—another Pogue and Kook match? Only time will tell.

The Plot.

In an interview with Entertainment WeeklyOuter Banks showrunners teased what might be in store this season. "John B's relationship with his dad is a huge theme and having his dad back around and eventually they're going to meet back up and John B has to reconcile his idealized version of his dead dad with the reality of his alive dad," said showrunner Josh Pate. He continued, "It gives us a lot of thematic father-son stuff to work with." Other notable plot lines? The showrunners hope to give fans a greater glimpse of teenage life and all that comes with it—aka romance and drama.

Additionally, in the Season 2 finale, the Pogues found themselves stranded on an island, which they coined Poguelandia. While nothing can be confirmed until the season comes out, fans can probably expect to see more campfires, beach scenes, and Pogue adventures.

While the plot is probably best as a surprise, Stokes took to social media back in March 2022 to ask fans to please not share any spoilers—check TikTok at your own risk. "I hate that I'm having to post this again but please, do not post spoilers of us working," according to E! News. The actor continued, "This is an exhausting process and we have a really exciting story to tell." However, he guaranteed fans that the wait for the upcoming season will all be worth it.

In 2021, Cline spoke to L'OFFICIEL about where she hopes to see Sarah in Season 3. She said, "I would love to see almost this Rachel Greene-esque kind of dynamic where she gets a job and she doesn't know anything about what she is doing and maybe she is making smoothies and she mixes the wrong recipes and just something completely horrifying in it. I just really wanna see her learn to truly be on her own and find independence and gratification in herself and that her family does not define her."

Based on the trailer, we know a few things: 1. It seems the Pogues are rescued from their deserted island and taken back to the Outer Banks. 2. New character Carlos Singh tasks (read: threatens) the group with finding El Dorado. 3. John B is reunited with his father. 4. The fan-demanded romance between Kiara and JJ will be addressed. And 5. Rafe is still acting crazy and playing with guns.

The Release Date.

On January 3, Netflix revealed that Outer Banks Season 3 will premiere on February 23.
