New 'Emily in Paris' Love Interest Lucien Laviscount Opens Up About His Love of Paris
With his delightfully British accent, charming eyes, and English style, Lucien Laviscount spoke to L'OFFICIEL about his personal journey as an actor, Season 2 of Emily in Paris, and his role as Alfie.
With the premiere of Emily in Paris Season 2 just around the corner, some of the biggest questions about the show's upcoming episodes surround Emily Cooper's hunky new friend Alfie, played by Lucien Laviscount.
The end of the first season left the relationship between Emily (Lily Collins) and Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) up in the air. However, sneak peeks from the new season imply that Alfie may complicate matters by serving as her potential new love interest. Like Laviscount, Alfie is British and, like the show's protagonist, has moved to Paris for his job. The two transplants connect over their similar circumstances, but does their friendship end there?
L'OFFICIEL sits down with Laviscount to learn more about Alfie and his role in the hit Netflix show.
L'OFFICIEL: Why did you want to become an actor?
Lucien Laviscount: I was very young. I first started modeling when I must have been 10 years old. I was a child full of energy, quite naughty...I was offered to enter a theater course. I went there and it was love at first sight! A whole universe opened up to me to play, to have fun.
LO: What was your reaction when you found out you would be playing the role of Alfie in Emily In Paris?
LL: I was flabbergasted! In all fairness, it all happened so fast for me. My manager called me and said, "Darren Star would love to see you for Emily In Paris." I gave it all up: I loved the show, and I'm a huge fan of Darren's work. In less than an hour, I learned that I had a Zoom the next day. Everything was getting real…Our call was supposed to last 15 minutes…And we must have talked for over an hour in the end! Whether it's the show, our lives...And an hour after hanging up, I was told, "You're going to Paris." So everything happened very, very quickly, and I still haven't come down from my cloud since this announcement. It still applies today! (laughs)
LO: How did you prepare for this role?
LL: I tried to understand Alfie's mind. Who is this young man, alone in Paris, who is only there for work? He works because he has to work, it's not a passion. He is lonely. He cannot see the beauty of his surroundings. It was quite easy to analyze his mindset and evolve with it. Especially by working with Lily [Collins], she makes everything so much easier!
LO: How do you cope with the enthusiasm that your character is already causing among fans of the series?
LL: I haven't really had time to think about it yet! I'm just so grateful for the trust placed by Darren, Lily, and the whole team. They believed in me to bring the role of Alfie to life. The series was such a success that my only wish is that everyone would be happy that Alfie could exist in their story. For the rest, everyone will make their own opinion of the character.
LO: You mostly toured with Lily Collins and Lucas Bravo. Do you hope to have more scenes with the rest of the cast for a possible season 3?
LL: Yes! And that's what I love about the show—all of the characters have so much depth and so much personality. We can put them in any situation, they will know how to put on a show, with their dramas and their celebrations. Whatever happens afterward, I will love to explore different friendships with the other characters in the series. We'll see what it is—whether Alfie is just passing through in Emily's life or not. Whatever happens, I'm delighted to have been able to be a part of this story.
LO: What do you have in common with Alfie?
LL: He's very honest about his feelings. Good or bad. He doesn't do what he doesn't feel like doing, and I'm pretty similar in that sense. But also, he knows how to get good moments, moments of joy. It seems to me that he manages to reveal the best in others. We have all of this in common.
LO: If you had to have a one-on-one with a character from the show, who would it be?
LL: I love the role of Mindy [Ashley Park]. She's in the outpouring, so loud! The complete opposite of Alfie! And I'm sure they could do wonderful things together.
LO: What did you think of Paris when you came to shoot the series?
LL: It was my first time in Paris. It was pretty crazy. It is a real open-air museum. Everything is so beautiful, so rich in history. The culture, the people: there are real vibes that make you feel alive. I loved walking in the streets of Paris at night, getting lost in them…It's a magical place.
LO: Do you have a favorite place in the city? A hot spot?
LL: It might sound so cliché! But just watch the sun go down from the banks of the Seine. I did it several evenings, and it was mind-blowing each time. To stay in front of this spectacle, to think about the things of life… It was my means of escape.
LO: What are your plans for the future?
LL: To be a better version of myself. Trying to do my best in this world, to help those I can as I can. Telling great stories which I hope can help people, affect them, bring them light.
Season 2 of Emily in Paris premieres on Netflix on December 22.
