After a stunning performance alongside Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon in Little Fires Everywhere, 17-year-old Lexi Underwood will play Malia Obama, in the new Showtime series The First Lady. Viola Davis and O-T Fagbenle have been cast as her parents, Michelle and Barack Obama. Announcing the casting the decision, Underwood took to Instagram to share a few words about the big news. She wrote in a caption, "Sitting in so much gratitude. @michelleobama you and the entire Obama family are the epitome of excellence and will forever be my First Family. Malia, I am humbled and honored to tell your story."

The anthology series will focus on some of the female powerhouses that have walked the halls of the White House: Michelle Obama, Betty Ford, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Michelle Pfeifer and Gillian Anderson have been cast as First Ladies Ford and Roosevelt. Aaron Eckhart and Dakota Fanning are set to play Betty's husband President Gerald Ford and their daughter Susan.

Prior to her casting in The First Lady, Underwood played Pearl Warren in the Hulu series Little Fires Everywhere. The show follows Pearl and her mother Mia (Washington) as they struggle to mesh with the complicated suburban world of Shaker Heights, Ohio. She also appeared on children's shows Henry Danger, Raven's Home, and Walk the Prank.
