Amazon is partnering with Reese Witherspoon and her production company, Hello Sunshine, to develop a television series of the 2000s cult film Legally Blonde. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, known for developing and producing beloved hits like Gossip Girl and The OC ., are tasked with developing the series, the exact premise of which is still kept secret.

Who's creating and producing the series revival?

Schwartz and Savage, along with Lauren Neustadter and Witherspoon of Hello Sunshine, Marc Platt, and Amazon MGM Studios, are all producers of this potential spinoff. It also appears that Amazon's streaming platform and Hello Sunshine are looking to turn the Legally Blonde films into a multi-series franchise, with a potential second series also in its early stages. Conversely, we don't yet know if Reese Witherspoon intends to reprise her iconic role as Elle Woods in the potential TV series.

Around a year ago, Deadline disclosed that Legally Blonde was among the titles selected from the MGM Library for potential film and TV adaptations after Amazon acquired the renowned Hollywood studio. Collaborating with Reese Witherspoon seemed like a logical choice to leverage the intellectual property.

The first adaptation of Legally Blonde was released in 2001, with the script penned by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith as a film adaptation of Amanda Brown's 2001 novel, also titled Legally Blonde. Witherspoon famously played Elle Woods, a Harvard Law student; it achieved massive amounts of critical acclaim while also creating a huge cultural impact. It's argued that Legally Blonde is what launched Witherspoon to stardom. Subsequently, the sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde followed in 2003, along with the 2009 direct-to-video spinoff Legally Blondes, originally conceived as a potential series pilot. In the same article, Deadline also reported that Legally Blonde 3, co-written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor, has been in development for some time.

Potential Plot

The actress previously told The Hollywood Reporter that she was interested in taking on the role of Elle again in her 40s.  “I want to discover what age means to that character,” Witherspoon said in 2019.  “Aging, contemporary ideas, how things have evolved — or not evolved.”

Perhaps in this adaptation, the plot will follow an older Elle Woods as she continues to make waves in politics in Washington, D.C., as she did in Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde. Maybe audiences will get to see her as a politician or a top-notch animal rights lawyer with her own firm. Remember how she got her happily ever after with Emmett? Maybe we'll get to see how married life treats them as two highly successful lawyers—we love a good on-screen power couple.

Let's hope Reese Witherspoon reprises the colorful character of Elle Woods (and her Barbiecore wardrobe tinged with feminism) to the delight of her fans.
