In Jeremy Saulnier’s new thriller, Hold the Dark, Jeffrey Wright plays Russell Core, a naturalist who travels to a remote town in Alaska to help search for a missing 6-year-old boy at the request of the child’s mother, who believes her son was taken by wolves. But the reasons behind his disappearance are much more sinister, leading Core on a brutal mission that takes him far beyond his comfort zone.
The film was shot in Western Alberta, offering a cinematic landscape that is as beautiful as it is intimidating. While filming a scene in which Wright calls out to wolves in the wild, real ones howled back. “Wolf recognizes wolf,” Wright says. The result is a visual feast with enough tension to crack even the most resilient viewer.
Wright also produced the documentary short We Are Not Done Yet, which tells the story of a group of army veterans and active service members who come together for a poetry workshop and live reading in order to combat their PTSD. “It turned out to be one of the most powerful journeys I’ve had in the theatre,” says Wright.
