'It Ends With Us' Is Summer's Most Anticipated Release
It started on our bookshelves, and now it's headed to our screens. Here is everything L'OFFICIEL knows about the book-to-movie adaptation of Colleen Hoover's It Ends With Us, starring Blake Lively.
Already read the book and patiently awaiting the movie's arrival? You won't want to miss the release of It Ends With Us, which is now foreseen to arrive in theaters on June 21, 2024.
Colleen Hoover published her New York Times best-seller It Ends With Us in 2016, but it wasn't until six years later that the book gained popularity through TikTok. Celebrities like Kendall and Kylie Jenner have posted the acclaimed novel on their social media, telling their followers that they highly recommend the read. For those who haven't read it, buy your copy now because the It Ends With Us movie is officially coming to the big screen, starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni.
The story follows Lily Bloom, a young woman who moves to Boston and dreams of opening her own flower shop. One night, she meets Ryle Kincaid, a handsome neurosurgeon who instantly sweeps her off her feet. However, as their relationship slowly begins to crumble beneath them, she unexpectedly reconnects with her first love, Atlas Corrigan. While it's a story about love and romance, the book does touch on some heavy themes like sexual abuse and toxic masculinity. Nevertheless, fans of the novel are already preparing themselves to see their favorite characters on the silver screen.
The Cast
On January 26, 2023, Deadline officially announced that Lively and Baldoni will play Lily and Ryle. Baldoni is also the director of the film. Months later on May 1, 2023, Hoover confirmed via Instagram that Parks and Recreation actress Jenny Slate will be playing the role of Allysa, Ryle’s sister. Actor Hasan Minhaj was also confirmed to be joining the film as Allysa's husband, Marshall. Actor Brandon Skelnar will be playing the part of Lily's first love, Atlas, and Isabela Ferrer will be Lily's younger self.
As a little teaser, Lively posted an Instagram story of herself with dark, red hair and "Lily (My One and Only)” by the Smashing Pumpkins playing in the background. We have seen the Gossip Girl actress in countless roles, ranging from comedy to dramatic, so we have no doubt she'll smash this performance as well.
The Plot
No official plot details have been released, though we are expecting that the plot won't stray far from the original storyline. However, some fans have called for the film to dial back the abuse storylines as other film adaptations have done in the past.
Release Date
It Ends with Us was initially to be released on February 9, 2024, but likely due to strikes in Hollywood, it was delayed. But not to worry, the film has a new release date and will be in theaters this summer on June 21, 2024. If you haven't read the book yet, be sure to do so before it hits the big screen in a few months.
