Grace Jones' 6 Best Movies
From a fierce warrior in Conan the Destroyer to a high fashion model in Boomerang, see the icon in action in these movies.
Grace Jones is an inimitable force in the music, fashion, and film realms. A style and beauty icon of the 1970s and '80s, Jones gained recognition for walking the runways of Yves Saint Laurent, Kenzo Takada, and Azzedine Alaïa. Admired for her androgynous look and strong features, the Jamaican-born model countered the Euro-centric supermodels of the period. But Jones transcended her status as a fashion figure, going on to become a fixture of New York City's disco scene and a leading voice in the new wave dance music of the 1980s. Recently, the singer lent her talents to Beyoncé's new dance album Renaissance.
With more than just fashion and music range, the star also conquered film, appearing in a number of movies in the '80s and '90s. In honor of her birthday, L'OFFICIEL looks back Jones's best movie roles. From the adventure-filled Conan the Destroyer to Bond feature A View to Kill, and comedy Boomerang, Jones showed her range.
The 1984 sequel to Conan the Barbarian stars Jones as Zula, an Amazonian warrior, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger as the titular character. The movie launched Jones’ film career, although she had already had six studio albums by this point.
Joining the James Bond franchise, Jones features as the assassin May Day. The multi-hyphenate designed her own dramatic costumes, consisting of leather ensembles and hooded looks. Jones consulted friends and fashion designers Kenzo Takada and Azzedine Alaïa to create her Bond villain wardrobe.
In this comedy-horror flick, Jones plays a vampire who works at a bar that two fraternity pledges happen upon. Although she doesn’t have any dialogue in the movie, Jones still stuns as the lead, fiery-haired vampire.
Continuing her ‘80s movie streak, Jones has a supporting role in the Western Straight to Hell. The film centers around three hitmen played by Sy Richardson, Joe Strummer (of The Clash), and Dick Rude, joined by a pregnant woman named Velma, played by Courtney Love. Jones’ cameo shows the star with a pile of chocolate-colored curls, rather than her usual flat top cut.
Jones appears decked out in ‘80s glamour in this mystery movie starring Ellen Barkin, Gabriel Byrne, and Jodie Foster. Barkin plays a woman who sky dives out of a plane and lands in the middle of nowhere in Spain without a memory of how she got there. As she tries to recollect the days prior to the jump, Jones’ character is introduced as a piece of the puzzle.
Back in her usual avant-garde garb, Jones plays Strangé, a high fashion model, in this Eddie Murphy comedy with an all-star cast featuring Robin Givens, Halle Berry, Eartha Kitt, and Chris Rock.
