After a long, hard year for the film industry, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences have revealed the 2021 Oscars nominations, leaving few surprised at the list of nominees. Due to the pandemic limitation of movie theathers, this year's prospective nominees were allowed to submit streaming-only films, a major change from the Academy's strict rule about theatrical releases.
As has been the norm in recent years, Netflix collected the most nominations this year with a total for 35. The streaming giant's big winner was Mank, the David Fincher-directed film about the making of Citizen Kane, which earned the most nominations of any movie this year with a total of 10 ballot listings. Netflix's other major project, The Trial of the Chicago 7, also racked up a promising six nominations. Other major films in contention for multiple awards this season are Judas and the Black Messiah, Promising Young Woman, Minari, Sound of Metal, Nomadland, and The Father, all which, including the aforementioned Netflix projects, have been nominated for Best Picture.
Notable nominations this year also include Chadwick Boseman's posthumous nod for his role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, as well as Emerald Fennell and Chloe Zhao's nods for Best Director for their respective films Promising Young Woman and Nomadland—the first time two female directors have ever been nominated simultaneously. Zhao's work on the film won her the Golden Globe Award for Best Director of a Motion Picture last month.
Priyanka Chopra and husband Nick Jonas announced the nominations in a two-part livestream. The ceremony was originally scheduled for February 28, but is now set to take place April 25 at the Los Angeles’ Union Station and the Dolby Theatre.
