At the audition, Bardot met Roger Vadim, a then-up-and-coming film director and screenwriter with whom she entered a relationship. Bardot starred in a number of films following her initial introduction to Vadim, including Crazy for Love (1952), Act of Love (1953), and Doctor at Sea (1955), but her leading roles in Vadim's Naughty Girl&nbsp;(1956) and&nbsp;And God Created Woman&nbsp;(1956) skyrocketed her to the global screen, solidifying her presence as an acclaimed actress and cementing her international popularity. <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/catherine-deneuve-auction-christies-2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Catherine Deneuve</a> acted in her first film in 1957, at the age of 13, but rose to stardom with the classic film and musical&nbsp;The Umbrellas of Cherbourg&nbsp;(1964). Deneuve quickly became well-known for her skillful portrayal of the cold and aloof woman archetype, a role which she played several times in films such as&nbsp;Repulsion&nbsp;(1965),&nbsp;Belle de Jour (1967), and&nbsp;Tristana (1970).&nbsp;Throughout her career, Deneuve was nominated for the illustrious C&eacute;sar Award a total of 14 times, and once each for an <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/academy-awards-2023-oscars-red-carpet-celebrity-looks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Academy Award</a> and a BAFTA Award.&nbsp;
Outside of her work on the screen, the French actress was also a prolific model. Rather than beginning her career as an actress like many of her contemporaries, Fran&ccedil;oise Dorl&eacute;ac entered the industry as a model for <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/jay-chou-new-global-ambassador-of-dior-men" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dior</a>. However, as the daughter of two screen actors and elder sister to the rising star Catherine Deneuve, Dorl&egrave;ac followed her <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/models-embrace-off-duty-looks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">modeling days</a> with several film credits, including&nbsp;The Wolves in the Sheepfold&nbsp;(1960), her debut film, and&nbsp;The Door Slams&nbsp;(1960), in which she starred alongside her sister.&nbsp;
Dorl&egrave;ac's work in the early '60s, both as a model and <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/riley-keough-facts-daisy-jones-elvis-presley-mother-husband" target="_blank" rel="noopener">actress</a>, earned her significant praise and attention from the press and industry figures alike, resulting in her eventual international stardom, following her role in the classic film&nbsp;That Man From Rio (1964), where she co-starred with Jean-Paul Belmondo, a well-known <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/iconic-french-new-wave-films" target="_blank" rel="noopener">French New Wave</a> actor. Dorl&egrave;ac acted in several more breakout hits in the next few years, working with directors like Roger Vadim and Roman Polansky. In 1967, Dorl&egrave;ac joined Gene Kelly and her sister, Catherine Deneuve, in&nbsp;The Young Girls of Rochefort.&nbsp;
At the young age of <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/black-models-fashion-history" target="_blank" rel="noopener">25</a>, Dorl&egrave;ac passed away unexpectedly after being involved in a fatal car crash in <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/travel-living/what-to-do-in-paris-trip-inspiration-travel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Paris</a>. The young actress was survived by her sister, parents, and lover, Fran&ccedil;ois Truffaut. Her final film role was the female lead in Billion Dollar Brain&nbsp;(1967), released months after her sudden passing.&nbsp;

Often known as the "<a href="https://www.foxnews.com/world/actress-bernadette-lafont-face-of-french-new-wave-dies-at-74" target="_blank" rel="noopener">face of the French New Wave</a>," Bernadette Lafont began her long career in 1958 with the film&nbsp;Les Mistons,&nbsp;which was directed and written by Fran&ccedil;ois Truffaut. Lafont also worked frequently with director Claude Chabrol, another director at the center of the French New Wave movement.&nbsp;
Over the course of her career, Lafont was nominated for several C&eacute;sar Awards, one of which she won for her acting in&nbsp;An Impudent Girl&nbsp;(1986). In 2003, she was also awarded an honorary C&eacute;sar Award for her service to the French film industry and her impact on the culture. Aside from her work on the film screen, Lafont acted in TV shows and even worked as a stage actress in several <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/stars-started-on-broadway-ariana-grande-nick-jonas-meryl-streep" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plays</a>.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/isabelle-huppert-actress-interview-film-cover" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Isabelle Huppert</a> made her feature film debut in 1972 with a minor role in Faustine et le Bel &Eacute;t&eacute;,&nbsp;a romantic comedy screened at the <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/cannes-film-festival-2023-red-carpet-fashion-celebrities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cannes Film Festival</a> that same year. Just a few short years later, Huppert won her first C&eacute;sar Award for Best Supporting Actress in &Auml;loise (1975), and shortly after that success, Huppert won a <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/beauty/bafta-awards-2022-beauty-makeup-hair-florence-pugh-lady-gaga" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BAFTA</a> for her performance in&nbsp;Le Dentelliere&nbsp;(1977), which acted as her international breakthrough role.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/chanel-spring-summer-2020-eyewear-campaign-pharrell-margaret-qualley" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Isabelle Adjani</a>'s first major role was in&nbsp;The Story of Adele H.&nbsp;(1975), a leading role in which she was personally cast by Fran&ccedil;ois Truffaut after he recognized her talent in earlier minor roles she played. The film was a critical success and a <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/fan-bingbing-interview-career-highlights" target="_blank" rel="noopener">global</a> breakout hit, causing Adjani to be nominated for her first Academy Award at only 19. Adjani held the record for youngest Best Actress nominee for over 30 years.&nbsp;
Following her Academy Award <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/music/2024-grammy-nominations-full-list" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nomination</a>, Adjani acted in several other notable films, including&nbsp;The Tenant&nbsp;(1976),&nbsp;The Driver&nbsp;(1978), Quartet (1981), and&nbsp;Ishtar&nbsp;(1987). Since the beginning of her career in 1972, Emmanuelle B&eacute;art has acted in over 60 <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/new-tv-show-films-december-2023-wonka-the-color-purple" target="_blank" rel="noopener">film and television</a> roles. After playing minor roles in several films over the years, B&eacute;art enjoyed her first breakout success with a major supporting role in the film Manon des Sources&nbsp;(1986), which earned the French actress her first C&eacute;sar Award. Since her first nomination, B&eacute;art has been nominated for seven more C&eacute;sar Awards.
Aside from her work on the screen, B&eacute;art has engaged in everything from modeling to charity work. In 2003, B&eacute;art starred as the <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/emerald-jewelry-pieces-for-may-birthstone" target="_blank" rel="noopener">May</a> cover model on the French edition of Elle magazine. The magazine sold 550,000 copies in three days, selling out the entire print run in record time. Juliette Binoche began her career in 1983 with a small role in a feature film. The minor role that Binoche played in Liberty Belle&nbsp;(1983), only required her to be on set for two days but offered the French actress a glimpse into the <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/jewelry-moments-chanel-cartier-breakfast-at-tiffanys" target="_blank" rel="noopener">film industry</a> and inspired her to continue acting. After her first minor role, Binoche went on to <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/lily-collins-reveals-gossip-girl-audition-jenny-humphrey" target="_blank" rel="noopener">audition</a> for Jean-Luc Godard's 1983 film Hail Mary, in which she ended up securing a role. Cotillard continued to work as an actress throughout her adolescence and young adulthood, working on French projects from TV ads to starring in feature-length box office hits. Cotillard earned her first C&eacute;sar Award nomination in 1998 for her work in&nbsp;Taxi, where she played the charming girlfriend of a delivery boy, a role that helped the actress gain publicity within France and on an international scale. After participating in the competition "Jeunes Premieres" (Young Debuts) and winning the Best Young Actress Award at the B&eacute;ziers Festival of Young Actors in her early 20s, Audrey Tautou was given her first major role in a feature-length film, co-starring in Venus Beauty Institute&nbsp;(1999), a performance that earned the young French actress her first C&eacute;sar Award. Following the massive success of&nbsp;Am&eacute;lie,&nbsp;Tautou starred in several more critically acclaimed films in the early 2000s, including&nbsp;Dirty Pretty Things&nbsp;(2002),&nbsp;A Very Long Engagement&nbsp;(2004),&nbsp;The Da Vinci Code&nbsp;(2005), and French film hit&nbsp;Hors de Prix&nbsp;(2006). Tautou also began an enduring relationship with the fashion house <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/chanel-tweed-high-jewelry-collection-fall-2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chanel</a>, beginning her journey with a critically well-received portrayal of Coco Chanel in&nbsp;Coco Before Chanel&nbsp;(2009), a film that was nominated for several BAFTAs and an Academy Award.
