Everything We Know About 'Euphoria' Season 2: Release Date, New Cast, and More
Ever since Euphoria dropped in summer 2019, there’s been one thing on the mind of fans across the globe: when will there be a Season 2? It only took one month for HBO to renew the breakout show, but passing the one year mark of Season 1's air date, we're still awaiting new episodes. The series quickly became a fixture of pop culture, influencing the most popular make-up trends of 2019, and subsequently inspiring a viral TikTok trend based on the same glittery beauty looks featured on the show. It launched the careers of budding stars Hunter Schafer, Barbie Ferreira, and Angus Cloud, and won Zendaya, who plays 17-year-old addict Rue, her first Emmy. Rue's story was set to continue this year, however, just days before filming began in March 2020, production was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fret not! As production resumes for film and television, more Euphoria Season 2 will be on its way soon–plus two bonus episodes. While we wait, L’OFFICIEL rounds up everything that we know about Season 2 to hold you over until Rue and friends return to the small screen.
Season 2 plans to resume filming in early 2021.
Originally set to air in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down production of Season 2. In an interview with Variety, Zendaya revealed that the crew was supposed to return to work on March 16, but said, "Literally three or four days before that, they were shut down."
While filming won’t resume until early 2021, everything else is ready to go. Before production was forced to shut down last spring, scripts were written, makeup was tested, and sets were built. So the crew just has to pick up where they left off before they start creating the magic of Euphoria Season 2.
Two special episodes will be released this December.
On December 6 this year, you can get your Euphoria fix before the return of Season 2 when the first of two special standalone episodes drops. The title of the first special, "Trouble Don't Last Always," has already been revealed, and the second title will likely be announced with its release date. Appropriate for its holiday season release, "Trouble Don't Last Always" will show Rue as she celebrates Christmas following the cliffhanger end of Season 1.
While standalone episodes, the specials will still fit into the fabric of the Euphoria universe and help fans get a better look at some of their favorite characters.
Season two will feature faces both old and new.
Season 1 featured a large ensemble cast of characters each with their own individual stories. It is likely we will see the return of all of these familiar faces in Season 2, and learn even more about the ways their lives intertwine, overlap, and diverge.
In addition to fan favorites, there will be some fresh faces as well. In early 2020, a casting call for Season 2 went out revealing that there will be at least four new additions to the Euphoria crew.
Gia, Rue's little sister, could be playing a bigger role.
In Season 1, we saw actress Storm Reid play the role of Rue's little sister, Gia. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reid revealed that she has been working closely with writers to try and bring Gia's character to fuller realization. The 16-year-old actress looks forward to filming Season 2 and is excited at the prospect of Gia having her own exploratory episode as many members of the ensemble cast had in Season 1.
The show’s rising stars want to see their characters challenged.
Euphoria helped launch the careers of stars like Barbie Ferreira and Hunter Schafer. Both actresses have said they are excited to explore their characters in the upcoming season, and see what the Season 1 ending sets them up for.
