Fans believe that Dakota Johnson's recent Instagram confirms she has been cast in the new Madame Web movie.

After Entertainment Tonight reported that actress Dakota Johnson was in talks with Marvel to star in the Madame Web movie, the actress took to Instagram to confirm the news herself. On her Instagram Story, Johnson posted a simple black screen with a small web in the middle, which Marvel fans around the world took as a confirmation of the role.

The Madame Web film will be directed by British director and writer SJ Clarkson. The character was first introduced to fans back in The Amazing Spider-Man comics in the 1980s, however, it's unclear what kind of relationship Johnson's character will have with Tom Holland's Spider-Man in the film.

Following the rumors about Johnson's casting, Marvel fans weren't too keen about the idea of the 32-year-old actress in the role. In the comics, the character is portrayed as an elderly woman, born blind and frail with a neurological condition known as myasthenia gravis that gave her psychic abilities. Of course, the MCU writers have been known to make an occasional change or two to the original comic book characters for the sake of the films.

Jennifer Lawrence had reportedly have been approached about the part first but declined.

The Madame Web project is just one of the upcoming Spider-Man spinoffs. Last year's Venom: Let There Be Carnage featured Tom Hardy in the titular role, while Jared Leto will star in Morbius later this year. The Spider-Man franchise has proven to be a major hit for the MCU; Spider-Man: No Way Home has made over $1.74 billion since its premiere in December 2021, the highest-grossing film in Sony history.
