'Bridgerton' Star Nicola Coughlan Begs People to Stop Talking About Her Body
Nicola Coughlan, the face behind Bridgerton's Lady Whistledown, opened up about the aesthetic pressures of fame.
Actress Nicola Coughlan, known for her role as Penelope Featherington in the acclaimed series Bridgerton, shared a post on her Instagram account where she vents and begs her followers to stop opining about her body and appearance. "So just one thing - if you have an opinion about my body, please don't share it with me," wrote the actress.
Coughlan explained that she has a hard time dealing with comments about her appearance, and, despite understanding that her life is public and exposed on TV, she asked people to use common sense before saying anything. "Most people are being nice and not trying to offend, but I'm just a human being and it's really hard to bear the weight of thousands of opinions about your appearance being sent directly to you."
This is not the first time the actress has spoken about the body-shaming she suffers on the internet. In December 2020, shortly before Bridgerton's debut, Coughlan hit back at criticism of her body in an interview with The Irish Times, saying "I’m not this gigantic sumo wrestler, and even if I were, would it matter? Would it be relevant?"
As early as March 2021, she was called the "fat girl" on the Big Calf podcast, where she received harsh criticism about her look at the 2021 Golden Globes.
"Every time I am asked about my body in an interview, it makes me deeply uncomfortable and so sad that I can't just talk about the work I do that I love so much," the actress said in response to the podcast.
