Actor Alec Baldwin killed 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and left 48-year-old director Joel Souza critically injured after an accidental shot by a prop gun on the set of his new film Rust.
According to local police, the actor shot with no intention of killing. Halyna, director of photography, was quickly rescued by helicopter to a hospital, but succumbed to her injuries and died shortly thereafter. Souza was taken by ambulance to the hospital to receive emergency care.
A Baldwin spokesman told AP that the incident involved a misfire of a scenographic weapon. The shooting took place at Rancho Bonanza Creek, a well-known filming location in northern New Mexico. Police are still investigating the case. No charges have been filed so far.
Police said sheriff's deputies were dispatched to Rancho Bonanza Creek around 1:50 p.m. local time after receiving an emergency call about gunshots fired on set. Baldwin co-produces the film and plays the titular role of Rust, an outlaw whose 13-year-old grandson is convicted of an accidental murder.
