A New Documentary on Grey Gardens Is Coming

Your favorite mother-daughter duo, the Beales, is coming back to the cinema.

Grey Gardens has captured the imagination of fashion and film for decades with its telling of “Little” Edie Bouvier Beale and her mother (cousins to Jackie Onassis and Lee Radziwill), and their diminishing East Hampton estate. The sartorial headwear choices of Beale (tightly wrapped headscarves) have inspired countless editorial homages, and the documentary itself inspired a TV Movie of the same name starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange.

Fans of the Maysleses brothers’ documentary, and the less-than-stellar TV adaptation, will be happy to hear that this May a prequel, of sorts, is coming to theaters. That Summer, directed by Goran Olsson, chronicles the Beales in the summer of 1972, three years before Grey Gardens, with cameos from Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, Truman Capote, and more. The footage was captured by famed photographer Peter Beard and has remained unseen until now.

That Summer comes to theaters on May 11.
