Who is Emma Raducanu? Meet the BBC Sports Personality of the Year
Young athlete Emma Raducanu is the first woman in 15 years to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
The young athlete Emma Raducanu is just 19 years old, but already promises to be one of the biggest stars of this generation in professional tennis. Raducanu's most recent achievement was the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award—being the first woman to win the award since Zara Tindall (equestrian athlete) in 2006.
"It's an honor to be among the nominees. I'm really happy about it, I've watched Sports Personality of the Year grow, and it's an honor to be among the winners," said Raducanu. At 18, the tennis player started at Wimbledon at 338th in the world rankings, but achieved the feat of becoming the eighth youngest player in history to win a Grand Slam—the sport's most important annual event in the same year.
The Canadian was also elected the new tennis player of the year 2021 by the WTA (Association of Professional Tennis Players). "I think Wimbledon was an extremely positive experience. I learned a lot just about my game and what it takes to perform at the top," shared the tennis player.
