Viktor & Rolf Couture Spring 2018

For Viktor & Rolf’s Spring 2018 couture collection, the designer duo made every single piece out of a single fabric: Japanese technical satin duchesse. All garments were cut on the bias, and the models wore exaggerated flower and leaf themed headpieces. Below, our show notes on the collection.

Memorable piece —

Look 16, a long-sleeve woven dress. The entire top of the garment was covered in colorful, lifelike flowers made of satin duchesse.

Remarkable fabric —

Everything in the collection was made of the same fabric, but Look 4 was a real standout for the structure and volume create with the mega-ruffled shoulders.

Best accessory —

Hands down, the headpieces, which came in the form of masks covered in faux, 3D roses, or massive leaves covered in various types of flowers.

Collection inspiration —

The collection’s inspiration was an exploration of the satin duchesse fabric, but also, the classic French bal masque (or masked ball)—hence the dramatic masks seen on models.

Potential trend —

If this show and Dior’s couture show (which also had a theme pegged to surrealist masks) are any indication: the masked ball will be huge for 2018.

The location —

The show took place inside the La Gaite Lyrique (a music and art venue) in Paris. The floor was a distinctive pink color and three doors were present, which models peeked through and walked around—sometimes alongside or past each other—invoking the theme of the masked ball.
