From 'The Bear' to 'Twilight,' Shop These TV and Movie-Approved Closet Essentials
Because where else would we pick out our closet staples than our favorite shows and movies?
We often look to our favorite TV shows and movies for outfit inspiration. Typically it's the out-there, eccentric looks that become trendy, like the hot pink femme aesthetic in the Barbie movie or the grungy black outfits rocked by Wednesday Addams. But, one surprisingly effective type of style to find from what you watch is actually the most basic essentials, which often become viral moments as viewers scramble to find replicas for their own.
Take the viral white T-shirt from season one of The Bear in 2022. This simple white tee that fans found out was $95 from Merz B. Schwanen soon became a viral moment in men’s fashion. While a heavy price tag for such a simple wardrobe basic, fans loved this shirt for its ability to look so everyday and wearable while maintaining style and quality, all Carmy approved.
Celebrities are usually the best influencers, and it makes sense that the outfits their characters wear become such hot commodities. Whether looking for a new basic or hoping to emulate your favorite character, keep scrolling for more TV and movie-approved fashion essentials.
The Bear: White Tee
Carmy doesn’t get much flexibility when it comes to what he wears. All he can do is throw a navy apron over a shirt that will inevitably get dirtied by kitchen grease or pasta sauce. Clearly, a renowned chef, Carmy is also a menswear aficionado. In the first episode, he is seen pulling out a stack of vintage jeans from his oven to sell, some dating back from 1944. So, Carmy would be the type to throw on a nice white $95 t-shirt to toss some meat on the grill or dig cash out of countless tomato sauce cans.
Unsurprisingly, the shirt went viral. Tiktoks debated the exact brand of the shirt while Reddit threads investigated. Stories were published on the internet IDing the tee. When fans discovered the Merz B. Schwanen top came from Self Edge, a menswear boutique in San Francisco, the store experienced a viral boost in sales.
While this may seem like a simple product, the tee is made of 100% organic cotton from Greece and made using a slow loop wheel process. If it’s good enough for Carmy, it’s safe to say that it’s good enough for us, too.

Knives Out: Cable Knit Sweater
When talking about viral menswear from TV and movie-approved fashion essentials, we couldn’t leave out the iconic cable knit sweater worn by Chris Evans in the film Knives Out. Who can forget the way the sweater perfectly fit him, exuding leisure and calmness in a pivotal part of the movie. The simple sweater essential soon became viral thanks to Evans and his irresistible charm. Movie theaters hosted screenings with a chunky knit dress code and the movie’s official Twitter even changed its name to Chris Evans’ Sweater Stan Account. Maybe it’s the murder mystery, maybe it's the bad boy who’s wearing it, but suddenly a cable knit sweater seems so dangerous and sexy.
While costume designer Jenny Eagan does not remember who made the sweater, plenty of knitwear retailers are happy to take part in the frenzy. Irish retailer Blarney Woollen Mills saw a 150 percent increase in sales of its Honeycomb Stitch Aran Sweater since the film’s release, and countless other stores have sold out of their own versions of the ivory-hued sweater.
Chris Evans probably saved the sweater industry, if we’re being honest, and the cable knit sweater will always be the perfect fall fashion essential.

The Marvels: Bra
When the trailer for Marvel’s The Marvels released, it wasn’t the compelling plot or strong female cast that stole the show. Instead, it was Brie Larson wearing that high-neck white tank top. Women everywhere were quick to notice that the lines of her bra under the top were completely invisible, perfectly supporting her figure while blending in. Once the screengrab made its way to Twitter in a post with over 33 million views, it was a quick race to discover what made the top look so good.
Larson herself set the record straight and also directed fans to the perfect essential everyday bra. She replied to the tweet, “It was a whole team effort: @ChantelleUS t-shirt bra (with an extra strap stitched in). Basically… we need new scientific breakthroughs to make this easier. Shoutout to Rebecca Higgins for engineering the beauty we see on screen!”
While it does take an extra step to add the stitch, the Chantelle t-shirt bra is clearly an effective way of dealing with the age-old problem of bras showing underneath white tank tops, and we are eternally grateful.

Euphoria: Red Hoodie
When thinking about the fashion in Euphoria, the cut-out tops and sultry mini dresses that are entirely inappropriate for high school would probably come first to mind. But, the TV-approved fashion essential that made its way to the forefront in Euphoria is actually the oversized red hoodie that Rue (played by Zendaya) wears throughout the show, significant in its meaning and perfectly cozy in its size and shape.
At the end of season one, Euphoria revealed that Rue’s red hoodie actually came first from her late father. He wore the hoodie during his battle with cancer, and after he passes she comes to claim the bit of comfort for herself. More than just a closet staple, the hoodie represents a sense of security for Rue as she wears it at difficult points in the series.
A24, the studio that produced the show, auctioned off the actual sweater in 2020 to raise money for Covid-19 relief. It even came with slight holes in the underarms from the safety harness Zendaya wore while filming the dance number at the end of season one.
While unlabelled, plenty of brands make the red sweater in all its oversized glory, but we suggest you take a jacket from someone you love to make it more meaningful.

American Horror Story: Murder House: Striped Sweater
There’s something about a troubled, murderous man in a sweater. For another TV-approved fashion essential, look to none other than the first season of American Horror Story, where Evan Peter’s character Tate Langdon wears a simple navy and dark green striped sweater. While the first season, Murder House, aired in 2011, girls online everywhere are still documenting their search for the perfect replica.
From styling to shopping suggestions to users even documenting when they see the unmistakable sweater in the wild like a celebrity sighting, the sweater remains an essential for anyone hoping to attain the effortless ease of the totally toxic but undoubtedly adorable Tate Langdon.
The closest match to the sweater comes from Brandy Melville, a slightly more oversized and muted fit compared to the one Peter’s wears but a great match nonetheless. Come this fall is a new trend style: sweaters from your favorite homicidal heartthrobs.

Sex And The City: Name Necklace
Taking it to jewelry, one of the most recognizable TV- approved fashion essentials is the always-iconic Carrie Bradshaw’s gold nameplate necklace. A signature staple, the necklace was with Carrie for all of her important moments, and she even feels lost when she momentarily loses it in one of the final episodes of the series. The necklace even makes its way into the first season of HBO’s revival And Just Like That.
On the 25th anniversary of this show this past June, Sarah Jessica Parker took to Instagram to commemorate the occasion with a photo of the golden Carrie necklace. The post reads, “It’s our silver anniversary but the memories will always be gold. X, SJ.”
While Carrie has too many iconic fashion moments to count, it is this simple yet essential gold necklace that has stood the test of time. Customize your own and look to it whenever you need a reminder of who you are.

Forrest Gump: Nike Sneakers
We all need a classic pair of sneakers, ones that are comfortable and stylish. Perhaps even ones that can be worn on a 15,000-mile run. When the titular Forrest Gump, played by Tom Hanks, is gifted a pair of Nike Cortez sneakers, it was clear the shoe would forever remain a classic, so much so that Nike would even go on to nickname the colorway, the Nike Cortez “Forrest Gump.”
Released in 1994, Forrest Gump is soon celebrating its 30-year anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, Nike is re-releasing the iconic sneaker, complete with the red swoosh, all-white leather construction, and blue wedge insert. The shoe was actually the first ever track shoe, introduced in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. More than just a legendary shoe with Tom Hanks’ approval, the Nike Cortez is a great high-quality sneaker with the perfect 90s aesthetic.
Keep an eye out for next summer when the sneaker will be making its grand return, and make sure to snag a pair of this sneaker essential. If you can't wait until then, versions of the shoe are available on resale websites.

Risky Business: Sunglasses
If you’re still feeling a bit of that nostalgia and are looking for another movie-approved fashion essential to add to your wardrobe, look no further than the sunglasses worn by Tom Cruise’s character in the 1983 film, Risky Business. His character, Joel Goodsen, represents all things fun and careless, and his sunglasses support his cool and assured look.
The sunglasses are the Original RB2140 Model of Ray-Ban Wayfarers, a set from perhaps the most well-known sunglasses in the world. His character brought the brand into renewed prominence, and Ray-Ban experienced a massive profit surge after the release of the film. Even now, people can’t help but fall for the allure of Cruise’s devil-may-care attitude in Risky Business, copying his button-down look for Halloween or wearing the sunglasses for an extra edge to any outfit.
Ray-Ban has always been considered a staple for sunglasses, and there’s no better option to add to your collection than the essential style that will have all the heads turning.

Freaks And Geeks: Army Jacket
It’s true that the show Freaks and Geeks ended way too early. Only 18 episodes long, the show propelled the careers of countless stars, including Jason Segel, Seth Rogan, and James Franco. The protagonist, known for her cool army jacket, was a young Linda Cardellini.
The rebellious look inspired teens everywhere during the time the show aired from 1999-2000, and the oversized style maintains its firm place as a fashion essential today. Costume designer Debra McGuire told Interview Magazine that the jacket came from a place of rebellion and anti-war sentiment from the Vietnam era. Cardellini’s character Lindsay Weir uses the jacket as an identity marker, using the coolness and danger of the jacket to get rid of her good-girl reputation.
That sentiment persists, as the army jacket has come to represent defiance in an utterly cool way. If you're looking to add a jacket staple to your closet, Freaks and Geeks has the TV show-approved fashion essential you need, and you can find the versions of the vintage jacket on sites like Depop.

Twilight: Henley Tops
And certainly, when it comes to fashion essentials made popular by movies, it would be a failure to forget the immense fashion impact of Bella Swan from the Twilight franchise. Kristen Stewart’s character represents the peak fashion of the late-2000s, inspired by the ease and simplicity that marks her humanness. The most iconic of her looks is the long sleeve henley tops she wears, a staple that has all of social media scouring for replicas to make their own.
The slim fitted shirts from brands like Lilu and Energie make for the perfect Y2K look, and Bella’s outfits even inspired the Grunge Fairy aesthetic, marked by forest green colors. Now, people are selling the tops on resale websites like eBay and Poshmark, including the green henley with white stitching Bella wears for $1,000.
Can you blame everyone for wanting to copy Bella? Not everyone gets to fall in love with a vampire with the perfect Y2K aesthetic, such as this forest green henley top. Made out of a stretch rib knit material, it has optimal comfortability and can be worn alone or as a layering piece.
