5 Things You Can Carry in a Mesh Bag Besides Oranges
Photography by Darby Routtenberg and Savannah Scott
It's a trend so prevalent that it needed to be addressed—why do people keep photographing oranges in these mesh bags? Search #meshbag or #netbag on Instagram, and you'll discover that one in every ten photos has oranges in it. What started out as a campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags for groceries has become an Insta trend that is rivaling avocado toast and latte art.
Although they're technically considered "grocery bags," they aren't marketed that way—just like Balenciaga's supermarket bag and shopping tote (each costing over $1,000), they're being sold as real accessories with uses that go beyond the grocery store. This "woven tote" for example, is going for $36, but if you bother to browse a bit, you'll find they're widely available for $3 each. If you want this bag to carry produce, may I suggest you go for the later? And why limit yourself to oranges when they mostly come in these red mesh bags anyway?
We rounded up five other items that you can carry in this summer's It accessory—round fruit not included.
Who is satisfied by an orange? Do yourself a favour and meet your hunger with a mesh bag filled with burgers and fries instead.
2. TOTING A CHANGE OF SNEAKERS
Living in the city means that one day soon you'll be stepping in a puddle of pee, or worse. Carrying an extra pair of Supreme X Nike Air Streak Spectrum Plus will put your mind at ease.
3. TRANSPORTING BOOZE TO THE PRE GAME
Show up to the function with a bag of fruit and you're cancelled; turn it up by including a bottle of booze.
4. CARRYING YOUR FAVORITE BOOKS
It's Simone de Beauvoir! It's Meg Wolitzer! It's Michelle Dean! Orange you glad it's not only oranges?
5. STORING YOUR SEX TOYS
Are your sex toys loose in your bedside drawer? How gauche! Use a mesh bag to keep your cuffs and vibrator safe and only *slightly* concealed ;).
Buy your own mesh bag here for $3 and carry whatever you want.
