Tyler, the Creator Drops Whimsical Louis Vuitton Men's Capsule Collection
Rebel prep, Craggy Monogram, Airedale terriers, and irreverent golfing style—this Tyler, the Creator's collaboration with Pharrell for Louis Vuitton Men's has all the signatures of the rapper-designer.
Whimsical Capsule Collection for
When Pharrell Williams built his LVERS community, creative collaboration was all but a certainty. Tyler, the Creator was a natural first choice. Both he and Williams have worked together for years and are style instigators; Tyler also recently composed the soundtrack for Louis Vuitton’s Fall/Winter 2022 men’s show. Now, the rapper-designer has conceived a Spring 2024 men's capsule for the Maison. We break down and uncover all of his spirited eccentricities in this standalone collection.
Years ago, a group of rakish rebels—Tyler and Williams chief among them—pioneered a new form of preppy, one that had an eclectic edge and a lot more style than the standard collegiate fare. That elevated prepster vibe is eloquently transposed into this collection, spread across a colorful range of apparel and accessories. Classic chinos and fold-up shorts are topped with a leather varsity jacket, pastel cable knit jumper, pink fair-isle vest, or contrast-collar blouson; the shorts suit makes an appearance as well.
The collection’s emblem is the Louis Vuitton Men's Craggy Monogram, hand-drawn by Tyler himself. Rendered in chocolate, vanilla and pastels, it evokes the creamy colours and luscious textures found in a French patisserie. The delectable motif is sprinkled onto a brown puffer jacket, an ivory windbreaker, and a denim jacket and pants set, as well as across the Maison’s bag icons, footwear, and metal jewelry.
Hidden amongst the LV Monogram Flowers are daisies and Airedale Terriers, recurring iconography in Tyler’s visual universe. Daisies, of course, point to his Flower Boy era, while the handsome hounds first appeared in his music video for 'Dogtooth.' Both motifs are skilfully incorporated into the collection, never once stealing the spotlight from Louis Vuitton’s own symbols.
With his streetwear labels Golf Wang and Golf le Fleur*, you’d think that Tyler’s a fan of the ol’ 18-holes. But no, the rapper only likes the moniker (Golf Wang is a play on Wolf Gang, the hip-hop group he’s part of) and not the game, going so far as to call it his “least favorite sport.” But that doesn’t stop him from making the coolest and most covetable clothing for the course. Pieces like the reversible windbreaker, technical anorak and zip cardigan are fairway-appropriate, while the grass-green Damier pattern recalls the putting turf, and is applied onto a golf sneaker, mini crossbody golf bag, and a full golf kit with head covers and towels.
From his music to the things he designs, Tyler has proven himself to be an irreverent creative force. The rest of the collection is filled with fashionable novelties, from a monogrammed cereal bowl with matching spoon to a travel chessboard with chess pieces hand-sketched by the musician. There’s a dog-shaped strap bag, a Sac Chien pet carrier, and a special edition Courrier Lozine 110 trunk, the largest that Louis Vuitton makes (remember, Tyler’s obsessed with hard luggage). It’s all a collection of offbeat objects, because why not?
“The chessboard is one of the greatest things I’ve made and is definitely my favourite thing from the collection.”
The Louis Vuitton Spring 2024 Men's Capsule by Tyler, the Creator is now live and available for sale.
