The Highlights of Milan Fashion Week Fall 2018
Massimo Giorgetti was heavily inspired by the city of Milan for MSGM this season, which we saw through embroidered scarves bearing the names of famous Milanese watering holes (like Jamaica and Bar Brasso). But it was his brilliant use of patent leather that was quite extraordinary, utilizing the fabric for trench coats, trousers, and windbreakers in exciting shades of red, pale pink, and burgundy.
Alberta Ferretti Fall 2018 was a vast departure from Spring 2018's delicate floral extravaganza. This season, there were more rugged, Westworld-esque influences like denim jumpsuits, high-waisted trousers, and studded cowboy hats. Heavy tailoring and structural pieces also dominated the runway and were very on-trend as they produced strong '80s silhouettes.
At Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturi Fendi presented the Fall/Winter wardrobe of our dreams in the form of cozy fur sweaters, suede trousers, capes, and elegant camel trench coats. Our favorite looks were those that emphasized (and subverted) the brand's iconic double-F logo.
There was heavy anticipation upon husband-and-wife duo Luke and Lucie Meier's collection for Jil Sander. It was a hauntingly beautiful show. Models took to the runway in simple makeup and erect chunky braids wearing minimalist and sculptural pieces. But throughout the diverse range, it was the sheer monochrome pieces—in the form of electric blue and firecracker red—that best caught our eye.
After last season's historic supermodel reunion, the bar was set high for Versace Fall 2018. This season we saw influences from both royalty and rock n' roll: two areas in which Versace has plenty of experience with. But, as always, Donatella delivered a tour-de-force of a collection full of sexy party dresses, distressed denim, and surprisingly, loads of tartan.
Alessandro Michele never fails to impress even the most jaded fashionista, offering glimpses and escapes into new, fantastical worlds with every Gucci collection he presents. This season, we saw models carrying replicas of their heads courtesy of Makinarium—an Italian special and visual effects company.
Miuccia Prada is a master of her craft, consistently pushing boundaries with every new Prada collection. For Fall 2018, we saw industrial-chic ensembles on the runway. Digital prints covered nylon overcoats, while bright neon colors were put proudly on display in parkas. rain boots, and cocktail dresses. Notably, supermodel Amber Valletta made her return to the runway, much to the delight of fashion fans everywhere.
Also of note was the show's opener, model Anok Yai who made history as the second black model to ever open a Prada show since Naomi Campbell. While it's sad that diversity is still a novel concept for a brand this big, we are thrilled to see a previously undiscovered face contribute to better representation for people of color.
