Netflix's 'Worn Stories' Delves Into the Personal Stories Behind Our Clothes
The upcoming Netflix series features ordinary people and the fascinating stories behind their most sentimental pieces of clothing.
Do clothes tell a story? The new Netflix series Worn Stories begins by theorizing that "we all have stories related to a piece of clothing." In eight episodes, a diverse array of people, their clothes, and the stories behind them are introduced, all far from concepts related to fast fashion shopping or the season's must-have garment. Streaming from April 1, the docuseries is inspired by Emily Spivack's best-selling book of the same name, which collected the stories of famous people and ordinary people alike, who delved into the personal history behind a special garment in their closet, oftentimes pieces they've held onto for years or plan on keeping forever.
No fashion designer, no fashion victim, no screaming magazine editor, it's a fashion story told by ordinary people. And it is the protagonists of the show that make it one of a kind. In addition to the interviewees, the garments are also varied and have a life of their own. The clothes are a part of the individuals' identity, regardless of their brand or economic value, and are not to be taken as status symbols.
What the stories have in common is the personal value given to everyday and apparently "trivial" garments. From the uniform of a supervisor to the university t-shirt worn by an astronaut before each take-off, the pieces are imbued with memories.
An eye-opening docuseries, it's not only about the fashion, but about life, memories, moments, and anecdotes that make a piece of clothing a piece of our history. See the trailer below:
