Much like horse racing tournaments like the Kentucky Derby or Royal Ascot, tennis tournaments are a hub for celebrity fashion moments. Attendees like to dress for the occasion, turning the sporting event into a social one. Wimbledon, the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world, is a major event for fashion every year, with members of the royal family and A-list celebrities always in attendance.

The tournament was originally founded in 1868, and Wimbledon has been held annually at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London since 1877. Because Wimbledon is such a huge part of English life every summer, the royal family is usually in attendance for some portion of the two-week long tournament. In the past, Queen Elizabeth handed out trophies to champions. In recent years, Princess Kate has been present to give trophies to the winners. The tournament is prestigeous and star-studded; guests can expect to see plenty of champagne and strawberries and cream.

Wimbledon has no formal dress code for spectators, but everyone is encouraged to dress smart and sharp. Given the long history of the event, it's easy to find plenty of inspiration for spectator outfits. Women often favor sundresses and heels, with men typically wearing casual suits. Though the dress code for spectators is not quite as strict at Wimbledon as you might expect, there is a very clear dress code for competitors: it is a long standing tradition that competitors must wear almost entirely all white in their tennis attire.

This year marks the 137th tournament for Wimbledon, and with several celebrities already spotted, there is plenty of room for more unforgettable fashion moments while sitting courtside. To anticipate the excitement of this year's tournament as our favorite celebrities begin to take their seats, L'OFFICIEL has taken a trip down memory lane to find some of the most memorable looks. Here are some of the most iconic celebrity style moments at Wimbledon over the years.
