Your Guide to Working the Sweatsuit

Just because we're going back to working IRL doesn't mean we have to give up our WFH comforts.

It's time for us all to emerge from our lockdown bunkers and go back to socializing outdoors, in the office, or in the classroom. That means we have to get dressed, perhaps even throw on a cute, stylish outfit, but working from home has left people all over the world accustomed to a certain level of comfort.

One of the WFH staples was the sweatsuit or the solo sweatpant/sweatshirt. That cozy cotton/polyester blend made lounging about a delight. You almost didn't mind having to stay alert on Zoom all day if your lower half could be hidden in a lush pair of sweats. Now, you shouldn't have to give that up just to re-enter the real world.

Luckily, there are a few ways to dress up the casual fabric. For the remaining warm months, try pairing your sweatshirt with a fun skirt and sneakers. Or, add some jeans and a fancier shoe—a loafer for instance. If you're opting for sweatpants, go for a jersey or crop top as a shirt. If there is a chill in the air, match sweatpants with a color-coordinated sweater that mixes textures.

When going for the full-on sweatsuit, accessories are key. Scarves, jewelry, and tasteful bags bring the suit into an almost elegant territory. If you're trudging to class or the office through cold weather, layer a wool jacket or trenchcoat with a scarf or hat to cover your dirty sweatsuit secret. Whatever lies beneath a well-fitted duster is automatically chic.
